Just what I expected
TrueHello
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

WHILE THE MOVIE MIGHT NOT GIVE AS MUCH AS AN IMPACT AS THE ORIGINAL, I FOUND MYSELF WATCHING THIS NEW VERSION IN DELIGHT. Alain Moussi shows his talent and lives up to his Martial prowess. JCVD playing the new mentor is also a delight, although doesn't give the same feel as the original's local Master. I agree to this change because it has already been done. Dave Bautista plays Tong Po and offers a new and physically tougher version of a once feared enemy fighter.
All in all this movie is a refreshing view to a genre that is slowly disappearing from the world of Cinema.
But I will always welcome this Genre back as it shows the viewers the importance of training, improving, working and learning. All these which is sorely lacking in todays Movies.
Thank you JCVD.

I usually don't complain about action movies that lack a decent plot, but Kickboxer had such a bad script and plot that I found it hard to enjoy this movie. There are just too many flaws and inconsistencies in the plot. Most of the plot elements did not add anything relevant to the story.I found the filming and image very enjoyable to watch. The fight scenes were descent, but nothing extraordinary. Some inconsistencies, but no more than I would expect from this kind of movies.A lot of useless annoying one liner are said throughout the movie and made the movie feel very amateur, despite the image quality. If you're looking for an easy watch, with some decent action, it could be watchable, but I would rather just skip directly to the fight scenes or watch some fights online, because the story is definitely not worth it.Overall, I would avoid wasting my time with this movie. Might have been more enjoyable on mute though.

"Kickboxer: Vengeance" (2016) has the same formula plot as the original, but none of the fun. There are several problems with this movie. To be sure, I pretty much anticipated the plot about the two brothers attending a kickboxing fight in Thailand, one of the brothers getting severely injured and killed, and the other brother (Kurt Sloane played by Alain Moussi) taking revenge. However, "Kickboxer: Vengeance" makes the mistake of being too serious about its subject matter with the result that all of the fun and amusing macho posturing of the original gets drained away from this film. In addition, Alain Moussi's Kurt Sloane is simply not as appealing as the youthful Jean Claude Van Damme (JCVD) playing the same role back in 1989. JCVD had more of a charismatic screen presence, because in 1989 he came across as the easy-going Belgian immigrant who just wanted to be liked. Worse still, JCVD's Master Durant (who is meant to be training Kurt Sloane in the latest Kickboxer film) seems to be tired and incapable of lightening up. As a result, watching these two actors on screen becomes a depressing experience. The film has other problems which go beyond the main characters. The original Kickboxer had a better sense of location and featured ancient ruins and even played Hertzog's Thai music. That approach works far better than rap songs and dimly lit interiors, which are replete throughout this movie. Lastly, the plot of "Kickboxer: Vengeance" is quite outdated and not very topical for 2017. It's worth remembering that the original Kickboxer was a child of the 1980s, where unapologetic macho behaviour was considered the norm. The cultural context has changed considerably since then. For one thing, many would not agree with model Sara Malakul Lane (who is the love interest in this movie) being given nothing to do except to show up for the sex scenes. The macho behaviour which got Kurt's brother into so much trouble also makes more sense in the 1980s context (as I remember those times, boys often felt the need to prove their masculinity in order to win acceptance) than today. As a result, this latest instalment of Kickboxer is not only gloomy and boring, but also out of date in the sense that it reflects a set of values that are no longer relevant in today's society.

I want to premise I'm a huge fan of JCVD and I consider Bloodsport and Kickboxer his main success and my fav movies... I don't know who decided to remake Kickboxer, but this movie is really garbage. I watched it last night without being ever involved, everything was flat and poor, characters, dialogue, editing, soundtrack. Bautista as Tong Po is an insult to all Muay Thai lovers, why not to try to use a real Thai boxer? ..the fake Tong Po that nothing has to see with the original one played by Mohammed Qissi (much more credible as Thai ). The training scenes of Kurt are like homemade, I could have done better, same screenshots, no pathos, no emotions, just a loop of the same images. I watched it until the end but I was continuing asking myself how its possible to make such a ugly remake. And the budget was more than enough for a movie without special effect. Ong Bak in this way teach a lot. I do now believe why this movie has barely touched the theater, I can save only JCVD that is always one step ahead regardless his age, but he's ridiculous when he speak to Kurt during the fight and his role of "master with the hat". Less than a B-movie, I can't believe there will be a sequel. "Kickboxer" didn't need a remake...
