Joe Audience Reviews

BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
Beystiman It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
ChanFamous I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
Cristal The movie really just wants to entertain people.
declan-murphy-96194 This is easily the sickest, most disgusting piece of excrement that I have ever seen in my 65 years. I am not squeamish, but this film shamelessly exploited gratuitous violence and sleaziness and truly had no "redeeming social value". All of the director, producer and actors should be ashamed of having participated in this flaming abortion waste of time. This film showcased the worst in human nature and had no lessons for anyone except the hopelessly depraved. I need at least three showers to wash this filth off of me.
v-ley I haven't found many movies that show a mentor that isn't a true Law enforcer, but has some courage, but this one was. I wish there were more "Joe's" in the real World and on a daily basis without the mouthy "activists" and this has nothing to do with color. Joe has his own problems and worked through them, until this young man comes along and needs just the right touch of Human interaction, the right kind. Too many people have an agenda today to actually DO something positive, this movie proves there are no needs for color, religion or monetary statute to stand up and do the right thing...loved it, loved the story line and found it believable and heartbreaking, all at once. I stopped watching N Cage for a while and now I'm playing "catch up" and glad I am. Give this movie a chance, it's well worth it.
MovieHoliks Over the past ten years or so, it seems Nic Cage has been drifting away from that actor who gave us mesmerizing performances in films like "Leaving Las Vegas", the "Kiss of Death" remake, "Lord of War", "Adaptation", and even more recently in Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans". He seems to have gone down that unsteady path of direct-to-video B-action star. But along with the recent "The Frozen Ground", "Joe" has Cage back in form. The film almost has the feel of something Robert Duvall would've made a couple decades ago- a story of a loser, and the people around him- how they affect each other. Now, I hear, like in a lot of Duvall's work, some reality seeped into "Joe". Apparently, the actor who played the drunk old father (a real-life alcoholic and homeless man himself) actually died during the making of this film tragically. And "Joe" is not a perfect film by any means- it's slow and almost aimless at times, but it's as if the director just sorta stuck a camera there and let things fall where they may. The reason to see this is for it's performances, including that lead kid actor, who's really good as well. And I hope this film & character is a sign that Cage is returning to the right path as an actor...
g-bodyl From what I have been hearing, Joe is a return to form by Nic Cage. I haven't seen many of his recent movies outside of the Ghost Rider series Knowing, and Drive Angry so I am inclined to agree. This film is a fantastic, gritty thriller about a kid finding the father he never had. This film is the 2014 version of Mud, ironically both starring rising newcomer Tye Sheridan. This film is very violent and has an explosive ending, but it is also a realistic portrayal of relationships. Also I must add a beware note to animal lovers because there is a good amount of "abuse" in this drama. David Gordon Green's film is about an ex-con named Joe who runs a company regarding the poisoning of trees. When he meets a 15-year-old kid named Gary, he finds a chance for redemption when he has a chance to save him from his abusive father. This is definitely Nicolas Cage's best film in years. He returns to form and has no crazy haircut or wild personality to speak of this time around. Tye Sheridan is one of the best newcomers these days and just like he did in Mud, he does a fine job portraying a troubled Southern kid. Overall, Joe is a very good film and finally a film from the 2010's worth crediting Nic Cage for. Granted, I have not seen those films to date but I don't hear the greatest things. This film is a realistic, gritty drama about relationships and trying to make life right. The director, Green certainly has a flair for making indie films that impact our everyday lives. Another fabulous film here in the vein of Mud. My Grade: A
