The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

I have a friend who has always wanted to be famous. Not famous for doing something, like writing a novel or acting in a movie or robbing a bank, but simply for existing.Apparently, there have always been people like my friend, because It Should Happen to You is about a woman who comes up with a scheme for attaining fame unattached to greater purpose. This movie could be described as likable actors making unlikable characters likable. Holliday, who begins the movie by obliviously tossing bird on a man, is a narcissist. Lemmon is the guy who claims he loves her yet continually harangues her. And sure, Holliday's idea is nuts, but why does Lemmon continually attacks her dream, and, for that matter, why on earth does he like her?It is a tribute to Holliday that she manages to make it all work, exuding a mix of sex, innocence, softness and steel that suggests someone more interesting than the script is offering. Holliday is funny and likable, and for that reason I'd say this is worth watching.

Garson Kanin's script here might not measure up to his best scripts like the classic Adams Rib and Born Yesterday, but with George Cukor directing, and a fine cast, this one is worth checking out. Judy Holliday as Gladys Glover, with Peter Lawford and Jack Lemmon in hot pursuit of her affections is a love triangle worthy of the screwball type of comedy that this is scripted for. The plot has to do with Gladys wanting fame, and so she rents a billboard in downtown NYC and just puts her name on it in big letters. Then Lawford (Evan Adams III) wants the billboard Gladys has rented for 90 days and desperately makes a deal to get it by giving Gladys 6 other signs downtown. From there Glady's with the help of an agent spiral her to fame and fortune. Meanwhile Lemmon (Pete Sheppard), a documentary film maker who gets to know Gladys before the bill board but gives her the idea to do it, is also after her affections. While Lawford is okay, Lemmon gets the better role here. His chemistry with Judy (Gladys) is better than Lawfords. Luckily the script agrees with the camera here and so there is a typical happy Hollywood ending for the film. As for the way of getting fame by using publicity, well that is still in use years later with people creating fame the same ways, only with newer technology. There are a lot of faces in this one a movie buff will known, chief among them is Constance Bennett who was Marion Kirby in the Topper film series. This is a good film with a talented cast. There were not enough films made starring Judy Holliday but then she died tragically from breast cancer in 1963 at the young age of 43. In a way this makes her forever young in films, and her personality shines here, like it does in most of her sweet 16 career roles.

Why couldn't Judy Holliday sing the lovely songs in their entirety? She had a gifted voice. Instead, we only get partial lines. That being said, we have a very good comedy here with Judy Holliday, as Gladys Glover, losing her job as a model of girdles and walking in the park where she meets up with documentary film-maker Jack Lemmon. Lemmon encourages an upset Holliday who gets the idea to rent a billboard over Columbus Circle with her name. She soon meets up with a cad, the usually suave Peter Lawford, the latter wanting the sign for his soap business. The film is then devoted to competition for the affection of Holliday by both men, though in the case for Lawford, it's more for business. As Holliday gains notoriety, she still isn't happy and this just shows that money isn't everything.Connie Gilchrist is wasted here as the landlady who reminds Lemmon to pay his rent by Friday at 5P.M.

This is supposedly Jack Lemmon's first starring role and from the moment he appears you know it's going to be a great picture. (How ironic that such a great actor should debut using a movie camera!) Add to that the spark of Judy Holliday and the sparks start flying like a diamond in the sunlight. But, sadly, they are black and white sparks.Hopefully, that won't be offputting to too many people. But I'm afraid it will be. It's genuinely funny and endearing. Perfectly cast as you hate Peter Lawford for the skank I've always felt he was and immediately fall for Lemmon and Holliday. But because of one stupid decision to make the picture in black and white when (in 1954) it was common to make color movies...Especially when the script and stars are so colorful. Well, it's sad.So watch it, enjoy it and let the color of love at first sight brighten it up for you in spite of the lousy idea to shoot it in black and white.
