The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

Short review here as most other reviewers have covered the film in detail. I will just say that the entire film was gripping and brilliant. The performances by all involved were some of the best I've seen in this type of film: completely organic and believable. That is, until, the final 15-20 minutes of the film. The ending, and the events directly leading up to it, are so obviously an attempt by the filmmakers to subvert the audience's expectations, that the whole plot takes a drastic turn toward the impossible. The final actions of all 3 of the main characters are completely out-of-character with everything we had seen up until that point. Therefore, all of the goodwill the filmmakers built until then is completely lost. As such, a film that could have easily been a 9 to me has now become a very low 6. For those considering watching this, don't bother. The emotional investment you'll gladly share in the first 2 acts does NOT have a payoff and you'll end the film completely disappointed. What a shame and what a waste.

Let's be clear from the bat, this isn't a zombie movie. The "Creatures" are more like 28 Days Later (2002) and are't undead merely affected by a virus. This dark gritty tale follows a young woman alone in the forest playing survivalist living off the land in order to survive the outbreak. Everything becomes more complicated however when she takes in a young girl and her stepdad. This heavily reminded me of The Survivalist (2015).Every once in a while the movie will cut to flashbacks giving us insight into her past and how she wound up alone but at no point did I find myself empathising. The movie though realistic simply isn't exactly gripping and though I was impressed with what they had accomplished this sadly wasn't entertaining.I appreciate this is a lot deeper than most films of it's type, but depth means nothing if you find yourself overwhelmingly bored. The Good: Very well madeThe Bad:Writing is patchyIncredibly boringSimply couldn't care about the charactersQuestionable endingThings I Learnt From This Movie:I'd be an awesome survivalist, if I could have high speed internet

I was really hopeful for this movie, a zombie flick with a big emphasis on survival. This movie however, more so hiding out and depressing flash backs rather than storyline or action or explanation as to how what happened happened. A great reminder to, if in this situation, think with logic, not with emotion and guilt. The unlikeable leading lady makes a huge, stupid decision which is the endings twist. Not great for survival at all. Not happy Jan. Basically a slow moving movie, you think there will be quite a few more exciting moments than there is, so its a let down.

I came into this film expecting low-budget, maybe-entertaining, zombie cheese... instead I walked away horrified at the human condition and its capacity to absorb emotional suffering. Here Alone is a slow burner, with little (but some) gore, and not too many traditional scare moments... it focuses on the humans in the movie, the human condition in general, and it's the better for it. Kudos to the entire crew of this modest-budget movie... they've done something special here.
