What a piece of pretentious claptrap. This is why I really, really hate European movies: they all seem to think breathless non-dialogue and ridiculous premises and big over-dramatic ambiguous endings are, you know, Art. More like Crap. Cate Blanchett was wasted and the other actors were just painful to watch. Not to mention the fact that the premise of this utter boresome snooze made no sense whatsoever. So, her husband was dead, there were drugs pushed by the big bad, she made an oopsie that killed four people, there are these Big Significant Connections between the two protagonists...what a crock. Doesn't require a suspension of disbelief but more like a total abdication of common sense. I really hope Blanchett didn't actually cut her hair for this, because it was a vain sacrifice if she did. There's a couple hours of my life I won't get back. Oh, and the half English half Italian dialogue trick was just plain tiresome. Do yourself a favor: go read a book instead. It gets a 3 for the gorgeous scenery and architecture. That's it.

The never-ending brilliant ventures of Cate Blanchett and the directorial hand of Tom Tykwer brought me to this dubiously titled film. I'm glad I overcame my distrust. The film continues to haunt me. Blanchett's subtle portrayal of an English teacher in Italy's northern Torino region who is driven by the self-interested neglect of her husband's murder by the Carabinieri (police) into herself attempting to exterminate the the drug lord behind the murder, as well as the deaths of scores of children whose addiction has brought them to the ultimate despair - that performance is sublime. Then, in custody, as she learns that her home-made bomb has not killed the drug lord but has taken the lives of four innocent people, she is overcome by shock. Only the young police officer Filippo (Giovanni Ribisi) who brings her back to her feet, can feel in the coldness of her hand how genuine her response has been, rather than the play-acting ascribed to her by her interrogators. It is that moment that transcends the hopelessness of both Filippo and Philippa (Blanchett) have come to feel and drives the story to its end in a kind of "heaven" above Montepulciano, Tuscany. Realistic? Certainly not. A haunting piece of art. Absolutely.

This movie is a really strange one. It has a strange sort of atmosphere around it. The acting is very good, the cinematography is really special with some amazing, beautiful scenes that leave you in awe. Also the music is well chosen. It's not original music, but by Arvo Pärt. I'm not going to explain why this film is so strange. Watch it, and you'll see for yourself. It starts already with the strange, but really well done opening scene. Also the end is so strange. I liked this film, because the story stays interesting, but especially because of the strange atmosphere and cinematography that this film has. Watch it, it's nothing like you've ever seen before. I want to say you will never watch another film like this! This incredible, loving, sublime, poetic drama film has a strange beauty and its gonna take your emotion higher than you ever felt! The direction is just perfect, may be the best Tykwer work, the actors should was nominated for an Oscar... Cate Blanchet took this film on her shoulder, and she did a really good job! Congratulations Tom Tykwer for have created a masterpiece of emotion. An Poetic sense of human behavior and their feelings after all.And if you never saw this film before, believe me, don't miss it! I mean It!
