best movie i've ever seen.

The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.

It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

This movie is a blast to watch. Then again, I'm a sucker for the "bad influence" buddy films, wondering how far the more reasonable of the pair will slide into Hell. And what price will be paid by one or both. This movie is not a documentary by any means. It's a testosterone-fueled male fantasy. So, if you liked David Ayers' other LA barrio cop movie, Training Day, you'll probably be thoroughly entertained by this. That goes double if you like The Shield. There's even a crossover character, Letty, from Training Day. Having had a few booze-filled good times south of the border myself, way back in the day, this film brings back good memories. Laters.

HARSH TIMES is an engaging little character study of what it means for an ex-soldier to live with post-traumatic stress, all wrapped up in a jazzy thriller package that recalls the 'edgy' likes of TRAINING DAY and NARC. Indeed, this is a film masquerading to be something it's not, and I'll be the first to admit I didn't appreciate the 'look' of it very much: the supposedly realistic, gritty, on-the-street vibe has been done to death both in the movies and on TV and it's something I'm frankly tired of. Drugs, casual violence, profanity; it's all here and proving there's nothing new under the sun.The good thing about this movie is the quality of the cast, as headlined by Bale, Rodriguez, and Longoria. They're excellent. Bale once again delivers the goods as a messed-up soldier haunted by his violent past, and he gets to do some great emotional meltdown scenes. A young, fresh Rodriguez is the perfect foil, while Longoria adds a bit of class to the proceedings. I found the film's storyline to be somewhat meandering, and some scenes feel extraneous to the central plotting. But it all comes together in the last half-hour which proves to be gritty, edge-of-your-seat stuff; it really is impossible to predict what kind of catastrophe is going to happen. The emotional coda packs a real punch thanks to Bale's heartfelt turn, making this film better than it has any right to be.

David H. Ayer's gritty crime drama took years to achieve mainstream acceptance, but today it is seen as a pioneering analysis of macho culture in the notoriously misogynistic Latino community.Christian Bale plays the traumatised manches with a bad case of PTSD and a scrawny Mexican girlfriend who won't let him do her in the puerto. Freddy Rodríguez is the baby-faced cabron who boasts about the size of his tienes but can't get it up for a bit of güey with his woman. If you're a short, angry pollo with an inferiority complex who's attracted to skinny, breastless women built like string beans wearing two peas beneath an optimistically padded AA training bra, this could be the movie for you.I rate Harsh Times at 26.64 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as a solid 8/10 on IMDb.

Bale gives a riveting, intensely powerful performance in this grim crime drama. He plays an ex-special forces type trying to land a law enforcement job so he can bring his Mexican sweetie to L.A. But he is also a petty criminal who has increasing flashbacks to his time in combat. And he can't seem to mend his criminal ways, even as he is about to begin a job ostensibly with Homeland Security. There isn't much plot, just strong acting and a sense of the specific time and place, on the streets of south central L.A. I was reminded of STRAIGHT TIME with Dustin Hoffman as an ex-con who can't control his criminal tendencies. Not a movie for kids or anyone expecting another TRAINING DAY. This is not your typical Hollywood fare and was shot for peanuts. It is the kind of gritty flick that actors die for. One caution: The plot takes awhile to kick into gear.
