Did you people see the same film I saw?

a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

"Generation Um..." is a pretentious shallow film about nothing. The pointless plot is about the lives of three uninteresting persons that live in New York: John (Keanu Reeves) is an unemployed guy and small-time thief and pimp. The Call-girl Violet (Bojana Novakovic) is a promiscuous drug addicted woman that has slept with at least two hundred men and three women. The call-girl Mia (Adelaide Clemens) is a disturbed woman that saw her father kicking the belly of her pregnancy mother that aborted a baby girl. Violet shags John and Mia and she are best friends. On the day of his birthday, John steals a video-camera and makes footage in the Central park and interviewing Violet and Mia. Then the girls go to a bachelor party. My vote is two.Title (Brazil): "Sem Destino" ("Without Destiny")

Why some people think that nothing happens in this movie, it's about nothing? At first glance - right, nothing happens, just an ordinary day routine, just a guy stole a camera… But please look inside the film; look deep into the heroes' souls! You'll see a hell, struggle, pain, flight, dying love.. All the action takes place inside a man, the movie is about the transformation of human soul. The camera gave them possibility to look at themselves the other way round. Confession allowed to take the hidden pain out….. and the process of catharsis starts. John's question "and what you really are?" – culmination point of the film, it's main idea. Everybody should ask himself once "What I am? Why I am? What's the essence of my life?" And Violet's reaction, one drop of tear, give us a hope that these people are not the lost generation. A very dramatic film, an extremely realistic! If not the famous actors I would take it as documentary. Its monotony fascinates. A Zen film. not for everyone. An excellent acting!! My great thanks to film creators for this job!

We have a technical first with "Generation Um..." a ShakyCam production done using what sounds like the on-board ShakySound mics! If the script and direction were killer good, that might have made this forced cinéma vérité work. The problem is it doesn't, and I walked out of the theater feeling really cheated. For gosh sake, if you have enough money for an A-list star like Mr. Reeves, grab your shots with the benefit of at least a pro camera, stabilization, lighting and on-mic sound. If you don't have the budget for that, refinance until you can do it right! If you don't, you are ripping off audience members who paid to see what they assumed would be a professionally produced theatrical film!

After watching Generation Um for the 4th or 5th time, I finally figured why I enjoyed this film so much - because it felt relevant. Not that I sniff cocaine or I hang out with two beautiful girls in their apartment; but relevant with their feelings of loneliness, suffering, and existential crisis (also perhaps most important for a mid 20s - being broke). It was crazy how I could be fascinated with a close-up shot of Keanu eating a cupcake, but that was exactly what Mark Mann has done. The camera work was to be praised too, all the vibrant colors of New York, even until all the odd decors in the house. Felt like I was traveling there through Keanu's camera.'Stalking' the characters for a day made me feel like wanting to know them more, their stories and struggles, how did they became who they were then. I felt like sitting in one of their conversations, not necessarily to participate, but merely to watch and be empty of worries, even just for a little while.
