For Colored Girls Audience Reviews

Kinley This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
tjl_mpls A rainbow of "colored girls" come together for a beautiful, emotional, and shocking story. The film is based upon poems written by Ntozake Shange. The poems led to a book called For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. They also became a stage performance referred to as a choreopoem, which melded dance and the spoken word. The cast of the film includes women coping with the hardships life has handed her. The film deals with a spectrum of issues like teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, pedophilia, poverty, rape, and religion. Tyler Perry (director) brought these stories together in a film that acknowledges life's difficulties while affirming our ability as people to rise above and find strength in each other.
tavm So I just watched Tyler Perry's adaptation of Ntozake Shange's play whose title is shortened here to For Colored Girls. It's quite a compelling drama about all these African-American women and the repercussions of their various tragedies. Each actress-Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Janet Jackson among them-brought their own dramatic talents to the fore which helped when it came time for the poetic monologues to be recited. I do have to admit that some of those passages were distractingly obvious when mixed with the more realistic dialogue but most of them were also very moving. In fact, since this was the first time Perry used material not of his own making, his touch isn't completely recognizable which is a good thing here. So on that note, I highly recommend For Colored Girls.
princebansal1982 I hate Tyler Perry's movies, they are the worst of Hollywood and I had no intention of seeing this movie. But somebody encouraged me to do it. I am glad I listened to them. While some credit does goes to Perry, a larger credit should to Ntozake Shange on whose play the film is based. Terry is by no means the master of his craft, but the source material has such raw power that it cannot be contained. It helped that all of the leads have done a very good job. Even Janet Jackson who I don't really like much as an actor has done an acceptable job.I love the written word and the thing that hooked me was really the poems which inter-mingle with the narrative. Though at times I was not able to grasp them fully I was still moved by them.P.S. - After watching this movie I tried another Perry movie "Why Did I Get Married?". It is a dud as all his movies I have seen before. So keep clear of his other movies.
dtoonotblaidke The emotions are not the only ups and downs in this newest Tyler Perry film. I have a great respect for what Tyler Perry has done. His films, however simple, send out positive messages and have incorporated music and humor like we don't often see any more. This film, unlike his others, is adapted from a platy. A great one at that (so I've heard).I'll be quick. The acting is beyond perfect. Why was Janet Jackson not nominated for an academy award? Her performance was flawless. Kimberly Elise is always amazing and she does not disappoint. Let's just say there was not ONE bad piece of acting in this film. Them men were great as well. Kimberly's husband is eerily intimidating. Amazing work.OK...Here's why the movie didn't get a 10 from me. The characters randomly vomit out poetry from the original play. However beautiful, it takes you out of the film. There is so much tragedy in the film... the poems could have been voice overs or in a diary... but not spoken aloud. That's the films biggest downfall.Overall, this is a movie that needs to be seen. These are real problems that are faced by real men and women. Great job Tyler Perry. Can't wait until your next film!
