I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

This film is one of my Top Ten Films of All Time, enshrined forever in the pantheon of great films. Everything about it is perfect, but most importantly, to be a great film it must be true - in other words - it must convey the "truth" of life - giving the viewer a slice of life that is true, that rings true, that is based on truth - that's what great art is about and this film is great art. I had never heard of Ventura Pons before but then I learned Food of Love is his first English film, although the version I have is dubbed in English, so I imagine the original was in Spanish. Does that mean the English speaking actors were dubbed in Spanish for the original? Enquiring minds want to know! Kevin Bishop, the young lead, is breathtakingly handsome yet he has a depth that sort of catches you by surprise because his beauty is so captivating. Juliet Stevenson, one of my favorites, is spellbinding in every scene - you cannot take your eyes off her - she is the core around which the entire story is built.

I think that the mother in the movie is the best, her performance is excellent. The typical housewife, sensitive, caring, nervous, and sad, sort of like the typical soccer mom. and she is not even a US actress. After the movie, I watched the extra material on the DVD, it seems that all those actors were from British. I have seen the young guy from that movie called Spanish apartment. he was hilarious in that movie with his British accent. And i was surprised that he speaks perfectly American English in this movie. however, i am not sure if that is his real voice. sometimes, i have the sound and the mouth don't match. He always look sad in the movie, don't know why. which is so different from the happy character in the movie Spanish apartment. I think that his performance was solid. hopefully, we can see more of him in the future.as for the pianist, he looks just too feminine gay, I think that it is a little too much.

First of all, I think I may have been blinded by either Bishop's beauty, or the fact that this film is so easily applicable to any mother and gay son relationship... But, I thought that the movie was quite good. At first I thought the focus was the relationship between Paul and Richard, but in fact, the entire movie (and it becomes so clear) is about Paul's relationship with his mother. I thought it very accurately captured the idea of troubled gay youth and frantic parental worry... I have a mother who's quite similar (without the divorce) and worry's as much... so it touched my heart in a heavy way. The culmination of all the assumptions, worries, and intertwined stories really made the last few moments an emotional ride like few other gay themed films. If you're involved in classical music, are between the ages of 18 and 27, are a gay male, and have parents who don't quite understand... this movie is for you. If you're a mother of the man mentioned above, this movie is for you, as well.

I enjoyed the movie, but it seems to me it is mistitled. The only love in the movie was between Paul and his mother, who seemed to suffer from some emotional problems, but their love at least seemed genuine. Basically this is a story about a talented young cute kid who gets in over his head. Paul is used by Kennington, who is Paul's idol. Then Paul gets used by Kennington's manager/lover. Paul does have a relationship with another older man but we don't get to see much about that relationship, but again it seems he is being used as a boy toy. Being that Paul is very young I can only hope he learned from these bad experiences, and pursues his real dreams.
