Imagine an old-school martial arts melodrama about competing fighting schools dropped into the grungy sci-fi world of Blade Runner, and you have an idea of the curious mix of styles in Flash Future Kung Fu. Eddy Ko is the maverick star pupil of an honorable school who secretly engages in underground "Black Boxing" bouts, a black market sport off limits to the school. The ambitious X-Gang, a bloodthirsty neo-Nazi-like organization, plots to take care of Ko and his friends and take over the city with their army of mind-controlled zombie soldiers. In true Hong Kong fashion, it boils down to a showdown of champions, and this one takes place in a boxing ring in an eerily empty warehouse with video coverage broadcasting the event all over.

Flash Future Kung Fu Audience Reviews

Reptileenbu Did you people see the same film I saw?
RipDelight This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
gorthu Wow, this movie is really out there. A lot drug use, weird murder scenes, and a shot of Wang Lung Wei's behind (not my type of thing, but I figure some ladies out there would want to know). In a setting somewhat similar to Mel Gibson's The Road Warrior, Johnny Wang Lung Wei and Ray Lui play friends who train all day to fight some Neo Nazis. And Eddy Ko has a nice role as their master. This is definitely not a well made movie, but I loved it. It's one of Wang Lung Wei's best fighting performances, and there's just something about seeing him in a black rain coat going off on people that gets me excited. A lot of his punches and kicks actually connect. I can't even count how many times I said "ouch" outloud. The choreography is done 80's Hong Kong kickboxing style, and it fits Wang Lung Wei like a glove. The bottomline is, if you are a fan of Wang Lung Wei, you have to see this. You won't be disappointed with his performance, trust me.The Tai Seng DVD is full screen and the picture quality is actually pretty decent. But there's one big problem. The movie seems to be heavily cut. I've heard about an original version under the name Health Warning, so I would advise seeking that out.
Edward How this movie won eight awards is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, the fight scenes in this movie great. It's the setting of the movie that threw me off. The director tried so hard to make this film with somewhat of a futuristic look with the apocalytic thing going around and the video games (atari). Oh yeah, you have to check out the future car they have in the movie. It's hilarious. Anyway, I'm the type of guy who rent's some low budget kung fu flick, throws it in the VCR, and expects to see the old school style of kung fu films with the avenging the masters death thing and what not. It's a good rent if they're out of every other movie. I recommend it just for the fight scenes alone.
