Such a frustrating disappointment

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.

Don't normally watch Dwayne Johnson films but with Billy Bob Thornton and a 6.5 IMDb rating I thought I'd give it a try. Wish I hadn't bothered. Film is dull, completely lacking in charisma or depth, and almost like watching a computer game. Even the action is dull. Only bright spark is Carla Gugino.

It can't quite reach fourth gear let alone fifth, for everything Faster does correctly it also lacks in something else. One thing is for sure, it's good to see Johnson at the helm of a gritty action thriller before he became Hollywood's most bankable star. Having recently been released from prison, a driver seeks revenge on the group of men that put him there and fractionally killed him. A simple premise of vengeance as the anonymous individual simply known as "Driver" drives down the dark road of hatred. I adored the serious nature of the story, the visceral gritty corruption that is evoked from the driver exhumes a sympathetic undertone. Adequately balanced as you question the actions he takes, determining whether what he is doing is right or wrong. It's not an original narrative, yet the reminiscence of western gunslinger classics seeps through the modern cracks to create a refreshing take on a vengeful character. Johnson's physical demeanour is intimidating, fortunately it makes up for his monotonous acting. Cugino and Thornton were wasted potential as they attempt to convey some emotional complexity. Grace was pointless. Jackson-Cohen played the typical British antagonist with the most forced London accent ever. Whilst I do appreciate the religious themes, like its topic, it came across as preachy and felt unnecessary, even if it was a plot device to taint the driver's determined mind. It's not so much an action film, more of a thrilling drama. A few car chases, some shootouts but mostly intense stares and a whole lot of muscle (his arms are like tree trunks...). The concluding twist, whilst predictable, was slightly underwhelming and really didn't leave much of an impact. It's paced slightly on the slower side however it works for me. Faster may not be as quick as viewers would expect, however it is a watchable thriller with a distinctly gritty style.

Driver (Dwayne Johnson) is a feared man released from prison. His tattoo denotes a mythical ghost-like quality. He was a bank robber but his crew gets jumped by another group. They shot him in the head but he came back from the dead. Now he's out for revenge. Cop (Billy Bob Thornton) is a former addict and a divorced dad on the verge of retirement. He gets the case with detective Cicero (Carla Gugino). Killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) has beaten yoga. He is a self-made man with girlfriend Lily (Maggie Grace) and looking to conquer life. He is an assassin for the challenge and he get hired in a mysterious phone call to kill Driver. This is a hard-boiled stripped-down revenge story. It does need something more to put it over the top. I really appreciate the idea of stripping these characters to their base essentials. Killer does need somebody with more gravitas. He is too much of the Silicon Valley hipster. He needs to be cooler than that. The best way to push the stylistic vision is to bring on more violence. It needs to be harder and more brutal. Overall, the Rock is awesome and there are plenty of solid actors here. However, this needs to be a little faster.

This was a refreshing change of roles for Dwayne Johnson, and I will actually go as far as saying that a role like the one in "Faster" is what he is best suited for. While the movie itself is a no-brainer, it is actually good entertainment. The movie's storyline is so simple that every can keep up with what is going on, but it still does manage to throw a twist towards the end. Driver is released from prison and has one thing on his mind only; to revenge his dead brother by taking the lives of those responsible. As I started out with mentioning, Dwayne Johnson was actually really good in this role and delivered quite well. I don't normally think much of the acting of Billy Bob Thornton, but he was great in this movie."Faster" is an action-packed ride with cars, guns, knives and a classic cat-and-mouse chase. It is well-worth spending an hour and a half on watching. Oh, and Dwayne Johnson shows that he doesn't need Vin Diesel to pull off a car movie. You know what you will get with a movie of this caliber, and it does deliver where it counts.
