wes-connors Showing off his muscle-toned body, Matthew McConaughey (as Tripp) is interrupted with his latest sex partner. She leaves abruptly, after finding out Mr. McConaughey still lives with his parents, at ripe old age of thirty-five. Acting athletic, McConaughey regularly uses his living arrangement to get rid of women, after taking them to bed. His parents want McConaughey to move out, so they hire professional "interventionist" Sarah Jessica Parker (as Paula) to date him and convince McConaughey to leave home. How this is supposed to be such a sure thing isn't clear, but "Failure to Launch" is a comedy, so you roll with the punches. You figure Ms. Parker and McConaughey may become genuinely attracted...This is competently directed by Tom Dey, and shows some obvious strengths in production, but "Failure to Launch" never gets off the ground. The comedy highlights feature McConaughey being bitten by several animals. These bites seems better suited to a low-brow teen comedy starring Pauly Shore or Adam Sandler. Even worse, the squirrel doesn't even bite the area best suited for that joke...The cast may have looked good on paper, but they don't mix on film. The leads usually have "best friends" who are a little older, overweight, or otherwise make the stars look better. They are often "ethnic" (Tyrel Jackson Williams appears herein, as a kid substitute). McConaughey and Parker's peers (Zooey Deschanel, Justin Bartha and Bradley Cooper) are difficult to accept as second fiddles. Going against the usual stereotypes when casting supporting roles is admirable, but you still want to flatter the leads. Lastly, you'll never guess which of the cast members gets to show bare buttocks in a rear view nude scene. Susan F I was home one night and planned on watching the immortal classic The Shop Around The Corner for the 20th time on TCM. I decided that the 21st time was even too many times for me. So I decided to give this film a try because I saw Bradley Cooper was in it and I thought he was quite good in The Elephant Man on stage, The Silver Lining Playbook and American Hustle. I could not believe how horrible this film is. I am embarrassed that I live in a world where folks liked this. The script was stupid. The acting, particularly Bradley Cooper, Zooey Deschanel and Jason Bartha were painfully bad. I kept on watching it because Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates actually were terrific and the NY Mets had already won their game. The Shop Around the Corner is a great romantic comedy. Failure to Launch is as we say in NYC, shtick dreck. Go to the Urban Dictionary and look up the expression.

Prismark10 Looking back at this now, you can sense that Matthew McConaughey realised his days as a lead in light romantic comedies would eventually be numbered. There is only so much much mileage in the slightly arrogant, selfish 30 something sports jock with an easy charm for the ladies and bonhomie with his male friends. It all got cheesy very quickly.Sarah Jessica Parker is Paula whose job is to date men who still live with their parents and are reluctant to leave home. By getting them to transfer their allegiance from the parents to her, they will then be willing to fly the nest.Tripp (McConaughey) is proud to be living in his parent's house. His two best friends Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha (both from the 'Hangover' films) also live with their parents as well. Paula is hired by his exasperated parents. It seems this is easier than saying 'son, its time you left.'Tripp is unlike other clients Paula has dealt with, charming, handsome, athletic, normal social skills, no low esteem and she ends up falling for him.Its a light plot and a flimsy story which becomes increasingly silly and unbelievable. The side plot involving Tripp's friends where they go paint-balling, rock climbing, mountain biking and incidents with various animals tends to be more amusing and pads out the movie. I bet the director now wishes he had more scenes with Cooper in the film.Zooey Deschanel as Paula's acerbic roommate is more memorable than Sarah Jessica Parker and her budding romance with Bartha looks more interesting.The film eventually ties itself up in knots, literally in order to come to a satisfying conclusion to satisfy the romantic comedy conventions.

Sirus_the_Virus Failure to Launch is a film that tanked with critics. But I was one of the rare few who actually thought it was funny. Failure to launch is one of those films that is obvious at times and somewhat silly but has things to keep it together. I'm tired of these Matthew Mcconaghay romantic comedies. I have no intention on seeing Ghosts of girlfriend's past. I don't think he can act. But this was probably his last good romantic comedy. The reason why I most liked it was because I thought some of the characters were great and that most of the film was funny. I will name the good characters: Kit(Zooey Deschanel): Kit is Paula's(Sarah Jessica Parker)room mate. Kit is obsessing about killing this mockingbird throughout the entire film. She's great in this film, like in every film she's in. I really thought she was great in this movie.Ace(Justin Bartha): Justin Bartha(One of my favorite actors) plays Ace. When I found out he was in this film, I had to see it. Ace is a dork who actually falls in love with Kit. I just thought he was good as Ace. Like I expected.Trip's parents: The main character's parents(played by Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw) are pretty funny in this film. They remind me of a Barone type couple, which I hate. But I don't hate these people. Though they try to throw their son out of the house, I could see why.I know getting bit by animals time and time and again may not be funny. I thought it was. Mostly do to the film's great characters and good humor but sometimes obvious humor, Failure to Launch still pulls together. I think you should see it.The Plot: Trip is a thirty something year old who still lives with his parents. So one day, his parents hire a woman to date him to try to convince him to move out of the house.
