Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good

Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

Brenda The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

Scarecrow-88 Silly nonsense from Charles Band who takes a very different path directing a supernatural stoner comedy about a malevolent bong with designs on taking over the world by stealing the souls of those who take a hit from "her." Plenty of bizarre hijinks in store. A couple of Band regulars stop by in cameo roles as those "caught" in the created world of the bong(..a strip club housing girls with fake tits, whose body parts tend to "bite"), trying to find a way out, including Tim Thomerson and Bill Moseley.Three serial pot-smokers take on a new roommate, an amiable chemistry nerd who must save the day when they become victims of the evil bong ordered from the disgruntled wife(never seen) of an ancient stoner(Tommy Chong, working his usual shtick).Very cheap production values as Band shoots only in two locations, the frumpy, untidy flat of the film's male stars(..including David Weidoff, as Alistair, the mild-mannered chemistry major who decides to smoke from the bong to save his love-interest, Janet(Kristyn Green)from within the supernatural confines of the bong's strip joint)and the bong's strip club. Some laughable effects include breasts that feature either a skull or shark heads with teeth that chew into the limbs of victims who think they are about to score with a chick. The show-stopping "highlight" would have to be this Zuni-doll, with a joint, that wacks off as a victim's neck is being torn into.Tommy Chong becomes an avenger(..ha ha)with plans to destroy the bong. There's this really strange scene where the very sexy Robin Sydney(..her smoldering sensuality better visualized by Sivertson's team)goes into a "horny frenzy" attempting woefully to excite her drugged out boyfriend.

barnthebarn Unique venture from Charles Band's Wizard Entertainment and directed by Band himself. The tale of a bunch of drug taking dudes getting hold of a bong that takes them to a weird 'Bong World' is imaginative but poorly plotted and quite tiresome. Cast is good, especially Robin Sydney and Kristyn Green as the female leads. Cameos link to other Full Moon films, Jack Deth finds himself lost in Bong World but fails to achieve any Trancing. Ugly doll from 'Doll Graveyard' pops up (kinda literally) and Gingerdead Man (here voiced by John Carl Buechler). Little Phil (as in Fondacaro) seems to be looking for vampires again and Bill Moseley poddles around looking lost. I suspect Tommy Chong was cast because of the obvious rhyming promotional abilities with him on board. Given little to do, he is (cue joke drugs reference) wasted. Not really a horror or Sci Fi, this is just another Pauly Shore film without Shore and with a vague aspect of what usually makes Full Moon films work. Witless, Charmless and Irritating in equal measures - almost sad to watch because of it.

James Bourke There was a time whenever I spotted Charles Band's name before a title, I instantly knew that what I would be watching would be nothing less than brilliant! However this is not the 1980's and those glory days of Empire Pictures have long since diminished. Such classics as 'Zone Troopers' & 'Dolls' have now entered into my hall of fame when it comes to my all time favourite Charles Band produced pictures.As we now know, Charles Band's Empire may have crumbled and for over two decades now the vast majority of his output has been hiding behind a Full Moon shadow, only a handful of titles beyond the endless stream of sequels have truly stood out, these being 'Doctor Mordrid' & 'Lurking Fear'.Whatever the downturn in Charles Band's fortunes can be theorised in many ways, we've all read the articles and heard the whispers of his Fagan like approach to business.Now I could claim to be the Charles Band's biggest fan, granted I am a huge admirer of the man and his movies, be they from his Empire heyday or even to the early days of Full moon.Of course my fandom of Mr Band could probably be usurped by someone else out there in fanland, but ever since my first brush with Empire Pictures and a certain movie called 'Ghoulies' I was instantly hooked.However it saddens me to say, that the output being distributed on DVD over the last couple of years has been less than startling. Yes the titles of these movies have been as ever a major highlight, but the execution has been somewhat lacking.In case anyone wondered, I didn't intend on straying to far from the subject matter at hand, you always need that lead in, and so it that I find myself watching 'Evil Bong' a supposed comedy but still in keeping with Charles Band's fantasy and supernatural themes.To be honest the only original highlight about the movie was the editing courtesy of Danny Draven, and the way he cut between the scenes.As the movie approached the eighteen minute marker I suddenly realised that something was rather amiss, for a stoner comedy, I hadn't laughed. It was only when Jacob Witkin appeared as Arnell's grandfather 'Cyril' that I actually found my smile.His character was similar to that of Rip Torn's foul mouthed world weary Patches O'Houlihan from 'Dodgeball' when he finally exited, it was the same old show.I've often been curious as to who actually writes these scripts for Full Moon, I realise that Full Moon themselves have never accepted unsolicited material, but I would gladly submit an idea to Mr Band for free with no strings attached.There was a run of movies that Band made, sometimes utilising his alias Robert Talbot and the scripts had been penned by Benjamin Carr, now Carr's name sounded so much like an alter ego and sure enough, he was revealed as Neal Stevens.So now I find myself thinking just who is August White, as his name has adorned the last couple of Full Moon flicks. Now whether or not it's the ideas he has to work with or he suffers from a terminal case of writer's block, but the man can't write, he has no ear for dialogue.Bring back C. Courtney Joyner, now there's a screenwriter! Another embarrassing feature to 'Evil Bong' was the cameo's from the likes of Phil Fondacaro, Sonny Carl Davis and more importantly the saddest sight of them all the great Tim Thomerson donning the raincoat to essay the role of Jack Deth for a meaningless walk on.Like I said before, I used to watch a Charles Band production because I knew that I was going to be entertained.These days, they can only be viewed with a critical eye and the biggest sigh the world has ever heard!

scobbah First, I must stress that I only saw this flick with the sole purpose of giving a lousy-rated stoner-flick a chance just for the heck of it and I suppose there is no need to mention that I had close to non-existing expectations when I hit the play button on my remote control.Noteworthy is, that the low-budget feeling was definitely evident but not in a charming way such as 'Bad Taste' or anything like it, but more as though they, at times, were trying to put a vile upon the viewer and thus conceal the truth, investing the whole budget in bong equipment and fake ganja while letting the plot develop (without suspension) in a limited number of rooms (I will not tell you how many, as I might spoil your fun watching this). Not to shed light upon the characters, who were so stereotyped that the producers could never have been expecting even stoners to enjoy their flick, depicting stoners as being utterly dumb and only longing for the next hit and getting zoned out - an illustration of something I cannot imagine too many of us are able to confirm, with that said, keeping in mind that I hang around stoners myself.With the evil bong seizing control over the poor stoners and the way it was depicted, we all burst out of laughter, sort of agreeing in unison that the motives behind the flick were all but to enjoy stoners nor anyone else who might be into stoner flicks.Do yourself a favor and stay away from this flick unless you do not wish to carry out a task as mine defined: "watching a lousy-rated stoner-flick just to be able cry out 'I did it'" aloud - checked.2/10
