Two strangers become dangerously close after witnessing a deadly accident. On a beautiful cloudless day a young couple celebrate their reunion with a picnic. Joe has planned a postcard-perfect afternoon in the English countryside with his partner, Claire. But as Joe and Claire prepare to open a bottle of champagne, their idyll comes to an abrupt end. A hot air balloon drifts into the field, obviously in trouble. The pilot catches his leg in the anchor rope, while the only passenger, a boy, is too scared to jump down. Joe and three other men rush to secure the basket. But fate has other ideas...

Enduring Love Audience Reviews

Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Borserie it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Curt Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
Spikeopath Joe and Claire are about to share a romantic picnic when a stricken hot air balloon drifts into the field. With a young boy on board and petrified, and the pilot desperately trying to anchor the balloon, Joe and three other men rush to help. But it will end in disaster and bring into Joe's life, Jed Parry. It's the start of something that threatens to spiral out of control.Enduring Love is an adaptation {screenwriter Joe Penhall} of Ian McEwan's novel. It's directed by Roger Michell and stars Daniel Craig {Joe}, Rhys Ifans {Jed} and Samantha Morton {Claire}. I think the first thing that should be noted is that the film differs greatly from McEwan's excellent page turner. Tho the essence of the source, such as obsessions, loneliness and to endure love, exist in the film, it does have a number of significant changes. If they be for better or worse,? well that's for others to decide should they enter both mediums.Enduring Love is a fascinating, if at times uneasy, viewing. One that is actually hard to sell to potential first time viewers. It struggled to find an audience at the box office on account of its complex themes and unwillingness to pander to the norm. And! it's cold, very cold {something that is brilliantly enhanced by Haris Zambarloukos' photography}. So ultimately it's a film that has no specific target audience, this in spite of some lazy observationists trying to lump it in with the formulaic stalker genre. Personally it took me three viewings and a deep delve into the DVD goodies to finally understand and get the movie. So with that I'd urge those who watched once and hated it to maybe try again. For film's of this type don't come around that often, and when they do it feels like a breath of fresh air. Even if that breath is tainted with a chill brought about by the human condition and all its intricate possibilities. 8/10
agelshaxe Enduring Love is probably one of the most thrilling books I have ever read with its exciting storyline, memorable characters and--of course--McEwan's brilliant prose. I was very excited to find out there was a movie based on the novel, even though I stayed cautious, not wanting to be too disappointed.Fortunately, Enduring Love is a fine adaptation of its source material. Though it doesn't go as deep as the novel does, it certainly delivers as a smart, different type of thriller.Daniel Craig is one of the highlights of this film, playing the lead character, Joe, with intensity and believability. Seeing him bounce off Rhys Ifans in their awkward confrontations is equally entertaining as the latter portrays the antagonist, Jed Parry, with skillful nuance. Samantha Morton and Bill Nighy on top of all that ? Heck yes !Though many details have been altered, one can see that the filmmakers have a good feel for the novel because its atmosphere is brilliantly transferred to the screen. The first frantic scenes, the paranoia throughout, the looks the characters exchange, it feels right. The only true criticism I would have would be with the pacing. It suited me but someone who hasn't read the book and really got to know the characters might not really care about seeing some things happen and at such a contemplative pace.Anyway... A good film which I enjoyed, but if you want the full "Enduring Love" experience, get the book (preferably during your vacation ! ) and savor it!
CountZero313 On form, Ian McEwan is the outstanding novelist of his generation. Unfortunately, Enduring Love is not one of his better works. The story could perhaps be made to work better on film, but this outing suggests not. The spectacular opening to the novel is faithfully captured here, when the main players quite literally drop into our lives. The other strong point of the novel is the suggestion that Jed may just be a figment of the protagonist's imagination, an intriguing plot device sadly not employed by the filmmakers. In the novel, the fact that Joe never calls the police hints at delusion on Joe's part; in the film, with Jed clearly all too real, the absence of any report to authority about Jed's stalking punctures our suspension of disbelief.Craig puts in another wide-ranging performance, while Morton, never less than awe-inspiring, is flawless. Rhys Ifans redeems himself for The Replacements with a genuinely unnerving performance. Who thought that soppy Welsh git from Notting Hill could be this scary? However, outstanding performances alone cannot redeem a less-than-compelling story. A two-hour film just does not allow the time and scope for the exploration of themes involving religion, psychology, biology and physics that McEwan dissects so well in his prose. In the film version of Enduring Love, there is something arid and stilted about all the clamour and confusion in the relationships. A lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing, to paraphrase the bard.De Clerambault is a fascinating, but obscure and rarely glimpsed syndrome. I read the novel when it came out, and remember thinking after reading the last page, 'So what?' In that sense, I suppose, the film is a faithful adaptation of the book.
Jay Harris Enduring Love was directed by Robert Michell, Joe Penhall wrote the screenplay, adapting Ian McEwan's novel.Daniel Craig,Rhys Ifans & Samantha Morton star in this rather strange drama. It starts off with a tragic accident, & one death. This part is very interesting, exciting & well done. This is the first 10 minutes of the film, then the remaining 90 minutes is all talking,(low key), It does get more dramatic towards the end. The script at times seems confusing, even though its mostly 2 or 3 people talking. The talk is interesting (its about love & life). The acting is the main reason to see this film. Daniel Craig made this 2 years before he became James Bond. Here he is not as pumped up as he was in Casino Royale. He is an excellent actor & definitely handles this role very well, so does Samantha Morton & as his girl friend. Miss Morton is very talented. The third character is Rhys Ifans, one of the newer actors & He will be a top draw performer very soon, (Think of a younger Christopher Walkin). Bill Nighy gives another delightful performance as he usually does. This is a hard film to review for me: as much as I liked the acting, sets, locations etc. I found the story on the dull side.. my 3 star rating (below) is at the bottom of the 3 star range. Its easy to see why this did not play in many theatres.(maximum of 50 in USA late 2004) Its R rating is mainly for the F word used throughout, BUT this is not a film for teens & younger.Ratings: *** (out of4) 80 points (out of 100) IMDb 8 (out of 10)
