Elvis & Nixon Audience Reviews

Alicia I love this movie so much
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Tymon Sutton The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
kohlundbender Having been an Elvis fan for the past 46 years, I was enraged by Michael Shannon's portrayal. He is both too old and too coarse in appearance to play Elvis. Elvis was full of light and energy. This actor is flat, one dimensional and appears to be under the influence of large amounts of Thorazine. Pathetic! I am not sure who was in charge of casting, but they missed the boat entirely. the movie was labeled a comedy but I never found anything funny about it.
Kirpianuscus a photo. and a fairy tale. and, more important, Kevin Spacey and Michael Shannon making splendid roles. short, an easy film, using too many details, maybe, too slow, and few magnificent scenes. this is all. a kind of docudrama, comedy and trip across the flavor of a time. and nothing more. after its end, the feeling is almost strange. one side - a film for the evening after a long and difficult job day. the other side - impressive performances. so, a film who could be a not uninspired option to see. first, for this so fragile equilibrium.
Andy Howlett This film almost passed me by until I stumbled across it on Amazon Prime. From the 'in period' opening credits to the bad wigs to the bro's in the coffee shop the cheese is strong and thick, but it's a very enjoyable film whichever way you approach it. Michael Shannon (who was completely new to me) neither looks nor sounds like Elvis but somehow fills the role very well, exposing a rather sad, isolated individual who just wants to be noticed for something other than being 'The King'. But the film is stolen IMO by Kevin Spacey, who captures ol' Tricky Dicky perfectly - the growling voice, the stoop, the hand gestures. Not only that, but he injects a wry wit to his part which goes a long way toward lifting this movie out of a dullness which threatened to engulf it at several points. I could easily watch it again.
townnfarmgirl This movie is a big bore. It's extremely slow getting started and the rest of it seems awkward and cringe worthy with the exception of the scenes depicting the meeting between the two title characters. Michael Shannon may be a good actor but this role was a terrible fit. Shannon is completely unbelievable as Elvis and could not have looked less like him if the makeup department tried. I don't mind if an actor doesn't look like the person they are portraying, but they should be able to capture their essence. I didn't think he did that at all. My opinion may be skewed, however, having grown up the daughter of a serious Elvis fan. I've seen just about just about every Elvis documentary and interview and I didn't see any likeness to Elvis in appearance or manner. Kevin Spacey's Nixon was, however, excellent. Thankfully it was a short movie.
