In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

This is a usual setup, unwitting guy has married a woman who might not be who he thinks. Paranoia ensues. As we go through it all, we come to understand that he had his dream woman all along and blew it for capricious human nature, it opens with him being divorced from her.It sits for a while on an edge I like. What if she reinvented herself as we find out, Texas girl who run away from a redneck life, and was determined to pursue him like a man would? What if she isn't manipulatively evil but he is controlling and wants her to be at home waiting for him? We get the notion that he might be a crank and it may have played a part in his first marriage. She would then be anchoring a world where you can be troubled and determined both, self is fluid and we have to suspend judgment until the dragon flies in the sky. Amick is sensitive and bold enough in her poise to facilitate this double perspective. But of course the anchor is moved to calculating ruthlessness and we collapse to devious narrator who has been weaving a story that entraps all along, complete with actors, props and backstory. It becomes the garish fun where she won't tell him if their kids are his own, and the hapless stooge is dangling on strings of what she controls. I give it a positive mark because of how watchable in that video thriller sense of sardonically invented storytelling for the pleasure, but we're watching a cartoon by the end.Noir Meter: 2/4 | Neo-noir or post noir? Ray is the owner of a prosperous architect company. However, he has recently gone through a very painful divorce. His friends try to cheer him up by showing him the positive sides of being single but for Ray marriage and stability is just too important. But when he meets Lena his gloom is quickly forgotten. She is beautiful, sensual, mysterious and he is drawn to her like a moth to a candle. They marry quickly, have their first child and Ray lives in a total bliss. But then strange incidents occur which shed some light on Lena's background.Ray slowly realises that he hardly knows anything about her at all....For once James spader plays a decent character whose misfortunes have nothing to do with him. Them there's the rest of the movie, which was made on the back end of all those psycho movies (single white female, unlawful entry etc) and it really shows. It's as if the makers of the film have chucked everything they can at the wall of adult drama and sees what sticks. Nothing really does.Amick is okay to begin with, but hen she just goes way over the top it's almost border-lining pantomime. It's all very yuppie and snobbishly made, almost as if it was made for the middle classes, but I hated the fact that they did this, I don't live like that, and why do all these things happen to stupidly rich people. If you are a Spader fan, it's worth watching, he is good, but for anyone else, it's a mess. And for a film in this sub genre, it's got one of the worst endings ever. It's literally 'is that really the end?'

This movie managed to slip under the radar as many Spader movies do. It seem to be made in that straight to video craze that went on back in the 80's. Everyone loved Sex, Lies and Videotape, but no one has heard of Dream Lover(which is a far superior movie). The movie is fast paced and moves with ease. Amick is a wonderful actress and has a great report with Spader. You could quickly fall in lover with her, if they made the movie a bit longer and slower, and you pretty much end up hating her by the end. That's acting! The cast around them is quite good as well. You'll recognize some of them, but the ones that stand out are in the nut house. This movie proves that sometimes hitting a woman is justified and it takes very little wrong doing to be committed. Watch this one, but don't go into it expecting a thriller. Expect a love story gone wrong and just enjoy it.

A late night boredom trip became quite a spectacle. Not only did the performances from Madchen Amick and James Spader feel realistic and genuine, the actions of the two seemed based more in reality as opposed to the Hollywoodized version of revenge and anger. While some might call this senseless trash, I call this a spectacle of the human condition, one that portrays the hidden evils within every person. With a solid B-cast, this film was certainly worth the time and money put into it. Also, the ending proved to be one of the best `revenge of the cuckold scenes ever.'
