A Disappointing Continuation

Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.

i was expecting blood and guts, head spinning and puke, what i got was a very deep mental thinking movie, aside from some obviously cheesy CGI it was very well written, and acted, im a huge fan of dar, horror genres and this one is probably up with my top 20, i give it a more then average horror movie rating but its not the type of movie to make you jump or something, some what predictable though, and i found my self jokingly saying 'wtf?' to some of the scenes, out of cheesiness though, not because they were bad, also the make up was pretty basic, there's an early scene with a 'demon' but the make up was hilarious, i found myself laughing most of the time while watching it

This is awful in a different way than the execrable Renny Harlin version. There is no scene you can point to that convinces you why Paul Schrader had to make this movie. He's made some real junk before, but it's shocking to see a Schrader movie that invokes no ideas whatsoever. To pretend like this has depth (and that was the reason it was suppressed) requires completely broken sense organs. Schrader can mark 2005 as the year he finally sold his soul completely, and eradicated the very last spark of intellect in his movies. Not helping things, is Gabriel Mann as Father Francis, who weighs about 95 pounds, has a distractingly sunken chest, and is off-putting in his over-emoting and sincerity. He is a very poor actor, and I was rooting for the earnest, whiny runt to get it good. Catholic overdramatics are the whole show. The possessed figure this time is silly and poorly dubbed. If you can't do better than Regan in '74 you really should skip the movie. Schrader is too much of a visual pornographer (pretty surfaces) to get anything out of this. All the sets, which are supposed to look eons old instead look like they were constructed one week earlier, then scrubbed clean again, an hour before filming. Skarsgaard goes for a contemplative evening walk at one point and passes multiple bright, sparkling clean brick walls that look exactly like a cheap set.

It's really difficult to say something good of "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" considering that "The Exorcist" is one of the greatest horror movies ever made. And try to add something great to the background of an iconic character such Father Merrin is absolutely ridiculous. Forget about Renny Harlin's movie and forget about this one. William Friedkin is, was and always will be the story you must remember and watch over and over again. Although William Peter Blatty author of the book and the first film claimed to have enjoyed the film directed by Paul Schrader, I must say that this disappointing effort adds almost nothing interesting to the series and to the career of the person involved with it.Similar to "Exorcist: the Beginning" (2004) Father Merrin is played again by Stellan Skarsgard and again his first involvement with exorcisms begun during an archaeological expedition in Africa inside of the ruins of an ancient church. Suddenly strange events starts to happen and faithful Merrin tries to comprehend all this things. The vantage of this film towards the one released in 2004 is the good dramatic moments, involving Merrin and Father Francis (Gabriel Mann) quest for faith. The horror was very boring, nothing scary or memorable to see, and that is the biggest problem of the film besides some exaggerations concerning too much summary executions that happens throughout the film (the script proves a point with that but sometimes it's just too repetitive and annoying). Performances are okay, Gabriel Mann is very good in every scene he appears (very sexy dressed as a priest); Stellan is not much likable during some scenes but dominates greatly during the last moments. Morgan Creek the distributor of this film should be ashamed to release this film and the other one directed by Renny Harlin, it only trashed a good franchise and added nothing meaningful to it. Boring experience. 3/10
