A different way of telling a story

The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

An ex-con who serves his time goes after his heist money upon his release from jail. After some rambling and a series disconnected events, which are supposed to be funny but can't break a smile, the presumably dark comedy turns into a drama centered around a neglecting father and an unforgiving daughter. The plot is spotty, uninteresting, unengaging and doesn't make much sense anyway. Jude Law stands out as a miscast for the "dumb and dumber" character he acts. This could be why his acting looks so theatrical. His buddy's acting on the other hand is as animated as a piece of wood. They are both unlovable characters with whom you can't sympathize and turn the movie into a borefest.

I am a Jude Law, and I will admit that there are parts of the film that meandered and bored me. Also, some of the comedic touches barely made me laugh. But Jude Law is absolutely mesmerizing as Dom Hemingway. When he is on screen I just couldn't look away. Does the film have problems? Yes, this is a flawed film, however, because of Law's performance I have given this a 7/10. It might be a little too generous, but he made an otherwise distasteful picture quite palatable.

Jude Law plays 'Dom Hemingway', a guy who is (wait for it) his own worst enemy. Brash, volatile and reckless, he is a one man walking soliloquy. Complimented by his loyal buddy 'Dickie'(Richard E. Grant), who is softer but no less earnest, 'Dom' is out of prison and looking to shake the world on his own terms and without consequence. The thing is 'Dom' is such a force of nature that it's hard for consequence to catch up to him. He's a walking hurricane of entitlement. Law's performance is amazing and unsympathetic even if his character is someone we've seen before and perhaps in better movies. (Alan Ford in 'Snatch'; Ray Winstone in...well, anything.) But 'Dom' has just enough redeeming qualities that one is encouraged to root for him. (It is Jude Law, after all.) And 'Dom' has a delightful pseudo self awareness in the way that people do who are forced into therapy. A hip electronica big beat soundtrack and strong supporting performances make for a fun but definitely unusual movie.

Dom Hemingway, a safe-cracker just released from prison sets out to get his reward for keeping silent and rekindle a relationship with his daughter.Richard Shepard writes and directs this Guy Ritchie, Matthew Vaughn- esque styled quirky gangster flick. Packed with colourful language, Shepard goes out of his way to try and break a record in using the 'C' word. Sporting a double-breast suit muttonchops and bridgework Jude Law has a blast playing against recent typecast as the alcoholic loud mouth, hard man Dom Hemingway. Law offers some vulnerable touching moments at grave of his wife Katherine, when he visits his daughter Evelyn (Emilia Clarke) and scenes involving his grandson. Richard E. Grant plays his one handed best friend Dickie, Grant gives a subtle great performance as a cross between the dearly departed David Niven and the late Mike Reid's Frank Butcher. There's great chemistry between Law and Grant. Beauty Mădălina Diana Ghenea is notable as Paolina, Fontaine's Romanian girlfriend. It's violent and humorous in places with some genius touches and great lines littered throughout. What it lacks in depth and structure it makes up for in pace as you follow abrasive Dom's plight with money, anger and relationships. It benefits from a good score and bona fide St Tropez and London locations. Overall, worth watching for Law's loose fuse, profane, dangerous Hemingway and Grant's performances alone.
