I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

Doctor Who (Peter Capaldi) and the lovable lady called River Song team up.This episode is the perfect example of why Capaldi is better than all other Doctor Who actors before him. In a nutshell: I watched this episode last night and now all I remember is the wonderful comedy of it all (between Capaldi and River Song). All I remember about the plot was that big red thing that looked like the Robinson robot in the Lost In Space movie of 1998. Everything else was comedy, comedy and it was very funny! If the previous Doctor Who actors tried to do a show like this the hour they would not have been as effective. Only Capaldi could pull this off so well. I am not saying the other Who actors were unfunny, just that their humour could never carry a whole episode like this.So this hour is perfectly matched to a bright Christmas Day, it is highly recommended!

Cheap unimaginative plot full of holes. What did happen to Dr Who ? Over the years the stories got progressively worse. Or maybe most of the money has been funneled from "script" to "special effects" ? On this season, only the "Heaven Sent" episode was okay-ish (ruined by a stupid ending)Is there any writer out there that want to keep the protagonists "in character", respect the lore and write consistent plots base on anything else than cheap feelings? It's a bit sad that Capaldi got served such bad stories. The few good scenes showed he was perfect for the role.In any event, avoid.

I can't get over how great the Husbands of River Song was. The humor was nice, and the beginning was a fun romp; but when it finally got down to business, The Husbands of River Song was one of the most emotional and well made hours of television of the year. I am amazed at how the writers called back to Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (some of my favorite episodes) 5 series after they aired. Even the music was a throwback to that two parter. Alex Kingston was as always amazing as River Song, and Capaldi gave another stellar performance. The Special Effects were great too, and the music was just beautiful. The ending is the 100% perfect conclusion to the Doctor's and River Song's love story, and it really is emotional. Overall, 10/10. One of the best episodes of series 9

The Capaldi era of DW has been an especially dark and morbid one, and DW Christmas specials in general tend to be grim, heart-rending and horrific, so it came as a surprise that this one turned out to be such a comparatively lighthearted (if gruesome) story full of slapstick and corny jokes. Despite the fact that the episode continued the miserable Capaldi-era convention that the Doctor must be continually enthralled and tormented by a swaggering dominatrix, I was enjoying the fact that at least it was a different one this time, since I was good and sick of Clara by the time we were dragged through that last heavy-breathing farewell scene between her and the Doctor. But then the fun hit the wall and we were back in angsty death territory, with River begging the Doctor to extend her waning lifespan. I guess the Doctor's compensation for having to play the straight man to a cadre of saucy female female impersonators is that he gets to play God and have them pray to him. This show has definitely strayed into unhealthy territory. There are kids watching!
