sarahfirman Okay, just so I don't get anyone's back up here (there seems to be a staunch group of defenders surrounding this film), let me first say that I quite liked Different for Girls. I'm not generally a fan of rom-coms, and I found this to be interesting, and raises some valid points in an articulate manner. However, that said, this film does take a while to find its feet. The first half-hour (the friends' re-meeting and so forth) is far too rushed. I don't often say this about films but this could really have done with another half hour of run-time. That would have seriously helped to establish the characters and ground their relationship. After the arrest, the film's pace slows down, and the characterisation improves, having space to breathe. The institutional discrimination is handled really well, and makes the opening scenes (which, as I have already stated, seemed rushed to me) seem like they are going to avoid the serious issues and implications in favour of being overly PC. By the end of the film, I was on-board and impressed. I can see why people are turned off by the opening, and potentially do not give the film a chance once it has faltered. If you can bear with it for 30 minutes, you'll get much more out of the experience.

didi-5 The premise of this film is a good one - two boys are best friends at school and then on meeting later one of them has had a gender reassignment (Karl becomes Kim). How will his/her former friend react when they meet again?In a difficult role, Steven Mackintosh does surprisingly well as Kim (except for a nude scene which is distracting for all the wrong reasons - that's when they really needed a girl); while Rupert Graves struggles with his feelings as the usually bigoted Paul whose preconceptions are challenged.'Different for Girls' has a lot to say about society's attitude to hims who becomes hers (and vice versa, by implication) and almost succeeds in getting to a conclusion as valuable as films such as 'My Beautiful Laundrette' were to gay liberation. It isn't really anyone's fault that it falls short of expectations, and the fact that it was made at all gives us hope of an excellent movie on the same topic in the future.

muze2222-1 Sweet, unafraid; understated and not in your face. Why in the Hell do movies about gay guys seem to be so much better than Lesbian Flix? Anybody know? Oh well; nice story, predictable and appealing to those who like "chick flix" and gender benders; in that order. I liked it. Sure, gay guys will love this; Doesn't take chances like Jordan's flick; Something of a "G" rated Crying Game. But, there is a great line "hey 'it' fits" says Prentiss, which really does bump this into "R" rated fare, during a sweet sexual moment between the leads. But, in general, this is a movie about "fitting in". And, as that this movie does convince and probably one of the better "indies" of 97. Enjoy

midastouch .SPOILER!!!! I saw the movie for the first time last night, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The performances by the two lead characters were not only believable, but touching as well.The most enjoyable aspect of the movie (and what could easily be missed if you miss the shower scene at the very beginning of it) is the twist in the story at the very end. In the shower scene, we see a young Prentice coming to the defence of and comforting a schoolmate after being picked on by a group of bullies/students for being queer. The assumption is made that the boy Prentice "rescues" is Kim/Karl. However, we only realize near the end of the movie when Kim/Karl's before and after photos are published by the newspaper that he was actually NOT the rescued boy, but one of the bullies instead.All in all, the movie is a really good watch, and I would definitely see it again....
