Dhobi Ghat Audience Reviews

ChanFamous I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
AnhartLinkin This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
Lollivan It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Fatma Suarez The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
azeemkhansmak Dhobi Ghat is a beautifully woven story of four individuals and one city. All actors in the film have brought out their talent extremely well (especially since almost all of the main characters come from unconventional backgrounds that are not mainstream acting). The script is a masterpiece and its filming has been done to perfection. Dhobi Ghat is not an 'Aamir Khan' movie, if you are expecting glitz and glamour of a commercial movie, one advice - Stay away from this movie. This movie will make you think! it is a subtle effort in capturing the trials, tribulations, desperation, depression, joys and sorrows of individual characters. The four characters themselves come with depth in their acting which was equally justified by the actors who brought them to the screen:Yasmin - A small town girl who has come to mumbai to live in mumbai with her husband. Kriti Malhotra (playing Yasmin) portrays a very delicate quality of hope converting to pensiveness and finally getting spiraling downwards.Shai - A rich investment banker, who is on a sabbatical and wants to capture mumbai through her lens, ably acted by Monica Dogra.Arun - Aamir a great actor plays Arun, an isolated character, who shuns being in the spotlight, who prefers to stay alone.Munna - A dhobi, who is the lifeline of the film, an aspiring actor who has migrated to mumbai and is trying to make the ends meet.Mumbai - A city which is at the backdrop of each story mentioned here. The city has been personified with its many inhabitants who add a little bit of color in their own way and bring about the collective art work of a city.Overall a very good movie, of world class standards. Editing is brilliant, so is the musical score, and the acting, and the direction...all in all, it is a master piece of art!
CriticGirl91 I'm not ashamed to admit that I did not see where this movie was going. Neither could I derive any meaning from it. But perhaps it was meant to be this way. What bothered me about the film was not it's fresh approach, for I found it engrossing enough; but the fact that I could not find any novelty in it. It is honest for sure, but what is special about a dhobi's unfulfilled dreams or the love of a man for a woman he's never met? Where is the substance to make a film about it? I do not look at a film solely for entertainment, and I'm more than thrilled when it broadens my perspective of life. But that's not something that happened with this film. The performances by Amir, Kriti and Monica are noteworthy, though I felt Prateik could have given a more involved performance. The narrative is distracting at best, and seems unnecessary. If it was meant to be satirical, I did not find it so. The narrator is very unimpressive as well. I believe in seeing rather than hearing in a film.I wish every deviant film would not be named 'arty' for there is simply nothing artistic about this one. Disappointing.
MartinHafer "Mumbai Diaries" is a very, very unusual Indian film. For those familiar with Bollywood films, you might expect a lot different movie than you get. There are no song and dance numbers. There are no film clichés or formulas. And, there is no real resolution to the characters and their problems. This is NOT a complaint--I liked the film--but I just want you to understand that "Omkara" is not what you are probably expecting. The film, not surprisingly, is set in Mumbai (Bombay). The story is about four people who are, in their own way, alienated. One is an artist who is afraid of commitment, another is a slightly out of touch American of Indian descent, another is a very poor man and the final one is a woman on videotapes--and you never actually get to see her live in the film. I could say a lot more about it, but frankly it's best to just watch the film and see it unfold. Because of excellent acting, the vague script manages to satisfy. Well worth seeing.
Newyorking There are so many good reviews about this movie, so I watched it also because it is produced by Amir Khan. The movie tries to be deep without really succeeding. Its a story about a few characters - Prateik plays a laundryman/dhobi, an immigrant photographer comes over from the US and befriends Prateik, Amir Khan is a divorced painter, and a woman records her life in videos that Amir finds and watches. I found Prateik the most interesting mainly because he had several shades - he was a wannabe actor, and interacted with a few different characters through his dhobi work. The immigrant was totally shallow, a typical photographer taking photos of every part of India and finding it all quite deep and profound, yet ashamed of letting her friends know that she knows Prateik. She was the most under- developed character. Amir Khan is just there as a painter. The worse part was that the immigrant slept with Amir the first time she met him yet was surprised that he didn't want to continue the "relationship" and considered it a one-night stand - duh, then don't sleep with the man the first night you meet him!Overall, the movie tries very hard to be deep and falls short. It was a boring movie, with no character development. You really don't understand what the characters are about, what drives them, etc. The movie is also directed and edited poorly, some scenes are very abrupt. I am very surprised Amir did this movie, he must really love Kiran Rao. He is such a perfectionist yet he acted in such a horribly directed film. I don't recommend this film.I usually love art films and have seen many many art movies, this one tries hard to be one but fails miserably.
