A crooked cop, a mob boss and the young girl they abuse are the denizens of a city's criminal underworld. It's a world that ordinary Arthur Poppington doesn't understand and doesn't belong in, but is committed to fighting when he changes into a vigilante super-hero of his own making, Defendor. With no power other than courage Defendor takes to the streets to protect the city's innocents.

Defendor Audience Reviews

Scanialara You won't be disappointed!
Stometer Save your money for something good and enjoyable
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
horizoninsight I remember seeing this back when it first came out. About 8 years later I was reminded of the movie.I love it. It sucks you in with sharp dialogue and relatable characters who you definitely root for until the end. Not only all of that, but the story/message is beautifully done. "Defendor" isn't like other super hero movies, though. It doesn't follow the same bland pattern we all know and love (or hate). Arthur doesn't fly or have "super powers". He is simply a guy in a make-up mask who protects people with homemade weapons (he uses a jar of wasps among other things) - whose purpose in life is to capture Captain Industry. Kat Debrofkowitz isn't your regular "damsel in distress" either. She is a young prostitute who first meets Arthur when he beats up Chuck Dooney for being a "punk with a badge". The whole first half of the movie is being told through Arthur/Defendor giving his deposition to Dr. Park explaining why he assaulted Mr. Debrofkowitz (Kat's dad). There, Kat knowingly lies to Arthur telling him Radovan Kristic (played by A.C Peterson) is Captain Industry - when he is in fact not - because she figures they both want revenge so it'd be a win-win. The second half is happening in real time.At the end when Defendor/Arthur gets shot I cry every single time. I can't help it and I rarely cry watching movies. Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings make a great team. Elias Koteas plays the prefect bad-cop-douche-bag. Sandra Oh is very believable in her role too. The whole cast did a stellar job, but major props to Peter Stebbings for taking a washed up premise and making it fresh, beautiful, inspiring, and for the ages.
Liam Blackburn Even though WH pulls off his character, this movie just doesn't pull you in completely. There's just something missing in it. I can't quite figure out what it is....but it may have started with the music. From the very first scene it has this over the top old school crime fighting music. The first scene is just underwhelming and the rest of the movie continues to underwhelm. Prostitute co-star does a great job in her role, and EK is great as usual. I think naming it defendor and having it all revolve around that is a fail. It should have been named after the main character, and not had a name attached to the super hero persona, it just gets tired and silly, especially with the defendOr spelt incorrectly. The actors hold your attention to the end, but there is nothing else very good about it.
Matthew McNaughton You might know Woody Harrelson from Zombieland The Hunger Games. (Or maybe Cheers? That was before my time.) But behind his gruff persona is just a guy who doesn't like the people who killed his mother. And he's out to get Captain Industry, no matter the cost. There wasn't much exposition or explanation about what was happening or why, but it's almost like it wasn't needed. It's hard to sympathize with him at first, but once you're told his back story you'll root for him until the end. Kat Dennings was wonderful, and her character arc was surprisingly thorough. While the description said that Sandra Oh's character was a focal point of the movie, she wasn't. The movie is mainly about the relationships between Harrelson and Dennings and Harrelson and Michael Kelly. It's not much of a comedy either; it's much too dark and dramatic to be.But it's wholly worth watching if you're a fan of Kick-Ass or Harrelson.
chris dimarino Defendor was a very good movie. I believe that certain people will love it. But more importantly, I can't imagine anyone who watches this movie all the way through hating it. This movie does a fantastic job of combining themes and emotions. It gives you comedy, drama, romance, action, you name it. Why it's unique is because it does all of this seamlessly without feeling forced. This movie does so many things well. In a world where high budget superhero movies based on deep dynasties are a dime a dozen, this one bests them all. It doesn't need superpowers to amaze. In fact, the reality of the situations are what make it so likable. Like a well oiled machine, it is able to switch gears effectively, bring you from laughs to tears to awe. Also, Woody Harrelson does an INCREDIBLE job of acting. The only negative that I can give to this movie is that it spends so much time varying it's purpose and theme that it's hard to love. It will appeal to almost everyone, but no one positive attribute of the movie has enough sustenance to be memorable. The bottom line on this one is that everyone should see this movie. This movie should be a prerequisite to owning a TV. However, very few people will likely re watch it and fall in love.
