I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.

Only thing this had to do with Day of the dead (1985) is that they are both zombie movies. Other that I will say it not a remake. It is great horror movie thou. 4.5 is underrating it. I give it 9 out 10. It has a great story line. It also has great acting. It also has great special effects. It is very scary. This a great zombie film. This movie is a must see. It one of the best horror movies of all time. Mena Suvari is a great actress. Nick Cannon is a great actor. Steve Miner is a great film maker. This is a very scary movie. See it. This movie is scarier then The Silence of the lambs ever could be. If it does not scary you no movie will. This is a very scary movie.

I was seriously excited about watching this re-imagining of George Romero's 1985 classic of the same name, but wow was I in for a massive shock and not a good one. Even with a veteran horror director like Steve Miner and a decent $18 million budget this film has no right to go by the same name as the 1985 day of the dead. Everything is computer generated so what was one of the 1985 films strongest features (Tom Savini's spectacular horror make-up) is lost and the zombies themselves are somehow able to climb the walls like insects. The acting is extremely substandard and the story gets lost along the way. This is a great discredit to the previous 2 remakes that were well made and overall much better films. The 1985 version is one of my favourite horror films and I feel betrayed by this shockingly bad version. Not just a bad film compared to the previous films in this series but definitely one of the worst horror films ever made.

So I've just finished watching Day of the Dead, and I must say I've rather enjoyed it. I've read some of the reviews and message board posts, and I can understand why people don't think it's the best film out there, not even the best Zombie flick. It's just a zombie film, and not such a bad one.The story is just about the same story like in any other film of the sort. A virus, infected, some people naturally immune, survivors trying to escape the outbreak. It's not an apocalypse film, as the virus is local, it's more like what happens before the apocalypse. The plot is nice enough. I did like the fact that unlike in other films of the sort, in this case the infected do retain some of their humanity and traits. Acting isn't all that great, though I don't think it's the cast's fault, as there's a limit to how well one could play the banal obvious rolls in such a film. I did like Nick Cannon as the comic relief, although it too was rather stereotypical (very Bad Boys). Nothing I can say about the direction and cinematography, and the soundtrack was OK I guess. All in all, it's typical Action Horror zombies. If you din't expect to be overwhelmed by quality, you can really enjoy this film for what it is. If you want a nice Zombie film - go ahead and watch Day of the Dead, but if you're looking to be scared or for a Zombie film that reinvents the wheel - keep looking.
