Scott LeBrun Paul Naschy portrays his signature role of cursed Polish nobleman / tormented lycanthrope Waldemar Daninsky for the seventh time in "Curse of the Devil". After he kills a werewolf on his grounds, he is targeted by a witch (Elsa Zabala), who arranges for him to be seduced, and transformed into a werewolf. In this instance, Waldemar finds himself falling for two very sexy sisters.The Daninsky series are fairly self-contained stories; one does not have to worry if they watch the films out of chronological order. The connecting thread is our tragic protagonist, a basically good and kind man locked into a haunted existence. Here, we do get a little more back story as to how an ancestor of Daninsky's was first cursed by Elizabeth Bathory (Maria Silva).Naschy is the heart and soul of the film, delivering an engaging performance that earns ones' sympathies. But the rest of the cast is equally splendid, and the young ladies present are very attractive. If you see the full uncut 85 minute version, there is some choice sex and nudity to add to the running time. There is also some fairly decent gore, tacky if for no other reason than the bright color of the blood. The story by Mr. Naschy is good, and the werewolf makeup, hearkening back to Jack Pierces' memorable work on "The Wolf Man", serves its purpose. The atmosphere and production value are comparable with many other European horror features, although it admittedly would probably play even better if one were able to watch a version with the original language, rather than a dubbed incarnation."Curse of the Devil" isn't in the slightest bit scary, at least not for this viewer, but it's still fun.Seven out of 10.

Leofwine_draca My second Naschy film (the first being WEREWOLF SHADOW) was much as I expected, more Spanish werewolf action. That's not to say it's a bad film, as it really isn't. This time however the scenery is different and much of the film takes place in a large forest which is nicely atmospheric. As for the plot, it's the typical werewolf story with the added bonus of witchcraft. I like the way Naschy always has to have as many different monsters as possible in his films, it certainly adds something and makes them more fun.There is some truly atrocious dubbing in this film, especially in the scene where he meets his lover's family. The words just do not match the mouth movements at all and no attempt has been made to sync them. Which is pretty funny when it appears on screen. The film has much the same Gothic atmosphere as your typical Hammer film, and benefits greatly from this. The budgets are obviously lower but there is enough action going on to keep this from becoming a problem.There's a lot of nudity again, especially in the black magic ritual, I don't know why women have to strip off when the devil is around but I guess that's the way it is. And lots of werewolf action too. The werewolf makeup in this film is, I have to say, quite laughable, but there's a couple of excellent man-into-beast transformations (and the required reverse beast-into-man at the end). There's a lot of gore on offer, and you know it's the '70s when the blood is a little too paint-like. Lots of people get killed and have blood covering their faces, there's also a maggoty body which Naschy liked to include in his films (hey, well all love maggoty bodies!).Naschy himself is once again good value for money, always the likable yet tragic hero of the story. The scene where the curse is put into practice is also quite horrible and effective. Altogether, this film is a typical werewolf romp and a lot of fun to watch as it has a lot of action and people fighting and getting killed in it. If you're a Naschy fan then it really is a must see.

dworldeater Curse Of The Devil is the first of Spanish horror star Paul Naschy's movies that I have seen. I have learned that this film is one of many where he played a werewolf and is regarded as one of his finer efforts. I did enjoy the film, but I would be lying if I was to say that this is first rate material. Curse Of The Devil does deliver the goods though for cheesy B movie Euro trash horror. Satan's disciples seek ultimate revenge on a family of a man who crashes a party at a witches coven and executes them. By doing so his family has the curse of the werewolf and is damned for all time. Things get hairy when Waldemar Daninsky (Naschy) attacks lusty maidens and noblemen throughout the village. The film does have some nice Gothic atmosphere and goes along well with the satanic subplot. It also delivers on blood and nudity with gorgeous European vixens showing their boobs and bushes. The dialogue on my version is English overdubbed, which is a riot and greatly enhances the camp value of the film. The make up werewolf f/x are some of the cheesiest I have ever seen. I nearly had a heart attack laughing so hard when the werewolf shows up in the film. Overall, this is a pretty schlocky horror film with plenty of flaws and a very low budget. However, Curse Of The Devil is a pretty entertaining midnight movie that delivers what fans of the genre want.

slayrrr666 "Curse of the Devil" is one of the best entries in the series.**SPOILERS**During the Spanish Inquisition, Irineus Daninsky, (Jacinto Molina) leads a raid on a Satanic Cult's hideout and captures the entire group, sentencing them to death. Years later, his descendant Waldemar Daninsky, (Jacinto Molina) accidentally shoots an intruder on his land while fox hunting. While traveling on business, they run into Ilona, (Ines Morales) a member of the cult, and take her home to recuperate. Invoking their revenge, she carries out a curse by nicking his chest with a wolf's skull. While recovering, he meets with Lazlo Willowa, (Eduardo Calva) an engineer renting out a house nearby, and his daughters Kinga, (Fabiola Falcon) and Maria, (Maritza Olivares) and becomes friends with them. As a series of brutal murders occurs around town, he figures it's him and tries to fight off his killer urges around the family before they discover his secret.The Good News: There's a lot to like about this one. One of the film's greatest strengths lies in it's exploiting of the essential sleaze aspects, nudity and gore. There's a large amount of really nice looking women going unclothed periodically in this one, and there's full frontal nudity in this during many occasions. As there's several sex scenes and a mass orgy scene, there's really nothing in here that couldn't be spruced up with nudity. The other big factor, the gore, is nicely staged in here, and this might be the goriest entry in the series. There's a huge amount of throat-and-neck biting, a couple of face scratches, a few get their heads sliced open and one gets their head crushed with a large rock. In addition, there's also gore in here that wasn't committed by the werewolf, including some stabbings with a knife, a wolf's skull plunged deeply into a chest, a scythe stabbed into a chest, and one person set on fire. The gory aftermath of several victims killed off-screen but shown with horribly mangled and rotting faces and bodies is also included, giving this a real heaping of blood that's quite refreshing. What really helps out is the really large body count in this one, as not only do almost every main character gets knocked off, but a large amount of characters are introduced only to be killed off a few minutes later. It's great to see a film use a gimmick like that solely for the purpose of giving another body for the cause. The scenes are also pretty creepy at times, as the massacre at the actor's campsite being a great highlight. With the driving wind, spooky forest setting and low light, complimented with off-screen wolf howls and a mild jump during the initial attack bring out a lot of suspense in the scene. Also quite nice was the young couple killed off in their home, as the sudden appearance of the wolf by smashing through a window into the room bringing a great jump and the ensuing kills complimenting a great sequence. The film is also wonderfully atmospheric, with plenty of old-school Gothic tones and vibes present in the film, mostly in the sequences of the coven looking on over their curse. With the swirling fog and back-lit, flowing blouses atop a wooden hilltop, it creates a chilling atmosphere. The forest areas at night are wonderfully shot, and look spectacular. It also has to be complimented on it's nicely original and clever plot. The addition of a Satanic coven and their revenge thrust into a Gothic werewolf story is nicely integrated, being used for the cause of both of the need for vengeance and the revenge itself, and doesn't seem out-of-place at all. With a really impressive pace, especially in the last half when it really gets serious with it's blood-spraying and some really cheesy vibes inside, this is a really great entry.The Bad News: There's only a few things in here that don't really work. The most obvious is the werewolf effects. It's hard to believe that progress in werewolf transformations haven't changed much, as this has the same kind of scenes shot years before this one, and come across as dated before they started. The werewolf itself looks cheesy rather than terrifying, although the large fangs aren't that bad of a choice to use. Whatever the man in black was supposed to be, he comes off as quite hilarious when he shouldn't, and isn't really told what he really is to begin with. The only other problem is the fact that it has a feel that it's been done before. Despite the introduction of the cult, this plays out like most werewolf movies usually play out without much change, and to some, that can be a fatal blow right there. It's not that bad, though and is quite good.The Final Verdict: With all the elements needed for a great film found here in abundance, this is one of the best entries in the series. Fans of the others will have a lot to love here, as there's really nothing that would disappoint them in the slightest.
