Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
dierregi Whalberg is Chris, a retired smuggler forced to take "one last job" to save his stupid brother-in-law who messed up with Chris former gang, lead by Tim (a totally unconvincing Ribisi).A blonde, Barbie-like version of Bekinsale is Chris'wife, Kate. The family is completed by two bratty kids who have nothing to do with the plot, except being mentioned as the reason why Chris retired from his evil life.As if this premise is not cliché enough, Chris is also a king of cool who cannot go wrong. His "last job" involves sailing to Panama as a crew member of a cargo ship with a handful of former associates. In Panama City Chris and gang are mixed up in one of the most absurd heists in movie history. Everybody dies during a massive shooting with the police, except Chris and friend, who do not even get a scratch.Among the many other plot holes: Chris and gang disembark without permission but the captain, despite his dislike for Chris, waits for them to come back; they sabotage the ship without any other crew member noticing anything strange; stupid brother-in -law smuggles cocaine on board, custom control being nonexistent in third world countries; they wear leather jacket in tropical Panama City etc...Back at home, Barbie and kids are threatened by Tim and his gang, but the audience can be sure that Chris will save the day. Besides fake currency and cocaine, the smugglers get home some piece of art to allow them to live happily ever after. Not only the script is awful, illogical and full of plot holes, but the "F" world flies around with such a frequency to make you wonder if in the smugglers world it is possible to speak a sentence without using it - it gets tiring to hear stuff like "Today the weather is f#%+ing good" "So glad to f#%ing know that", etc...
Adam Peters (62%) An entertaining crime B-movie that marks a small improvement over the usual multiplex filler you always seem to find at the first quarter of the year. The cast is quite strong with the always decent Mark Wahlberg leading the way, and with the likes of Ben Foster, Kate Beckinsale, J.K Simmons and show stealer Giovanni Ribisi all forming a respectable package. The pacing is pretty decent; although this is more of a thriller than an all-out action film so don't expect tons of action. The script is very Hollywood at times and there's not a whole lot to get your teeth into, but overall this is a watchable time-passer coupled with a respectable cast and basic cinematic fun.
Leofwine_draca CONTRABAND is a tale of cross-border drug-smuggling, centred around a tough, everyman character played by the underrated Mark Wahlberg. The film for the most part sidesteps modern-day Hollywood clichés, like shoehorned-in action scenes that add nothing to the storyline and are merely there to give choreographers and special effects guys a chance to earn their keep. For the record, there's only one (relevant) car chase.Instead this is a taut, suspenseful story that plays realistic for the most part, and all the better for it. The truth is that it doesn't bring anything new to the table and the thrills it chronicles are very familiar, but its depiction of the minutiae of the scenario keep it moving merrily along. It also has some suitably unpleasant bad guys to boo at.CONTRABAND also features a cast of former youthful stars who are nowadays moving into more mature roles. Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi play to type, but it's good to see Lukas Haas given some proper material and even Kate Beckinsale isn't too shabby. J. K. Simmons stands out in a supporting role as the ship's captain and Diego Luna once again delivers an edgy turn. The film might be no classic but for solid thrills and suspense you could do a lot worse.
CMTiago Contraband is a movie that only succeeds as a means to spend a session watching a movie, as I find it unimpressive and a bit of a drag at times. Of course if you like the genre you should by no means be deterred by my words and I'm sure you may enjoy it. The story follows an ex-smuggler (Wahlberg) as he tries to make an honest living but ends up back in the game to protect the ones he loves. The leading man is an approachable hero and one you can support, with his main character traits being his courage and boldness. The rest of the supporting characters handle the job well and as for the rest of the movie's elements, I would say they are presented with acceptable quality. Contraband isn't necessarily a movie you have to watch, but it shouldn't be avoided either. In short watch it if you want and you will be mildly entertained. I was.Rating 6/10
