Simply A Masterpiece
Quiet Muffin
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,

John Landis hits a home-run with Coming to America, featuring Eddie Murphy at the height of his powers. He plays the son of an African kingdom ruler(thus heir) who travels to America because he does not want an arranged marriage at home. This is a typical fish out of the water plotline with plenty of laughs and plenty of heart. The actors are all very good especially James Earl Jones as the father. If you in mood of a funny movie- one that is reeking of nostalgia than Coming to America is a film you should consider. In my opinion this is both Landis's and Murphy's best effort.

Edddie Murphy is one of my favorite actors, yet there are few of his movies that I enjoy. This is the one I like the best. Those who think he's too obnoxious will find Coming To America to fit the bill. The plot follows a prince who goes to America to experience culture and to find a bride. The humor goes throughout, but it's not joke after joke. One part I love is the Prince wakes up on his first full day in America and he screams out: "GOOD MORNING MY NEIGHBORS!" A neighbor who was rudely awoken responds: "Hey! (Screw) you!" Not knowing profanity, the Prince responds: "Yes! Yes! (Screw) you too!" Another impressive fact is that Eddie Murphy and his co-star Arscenio Hall both have 4 roles. Murphy, along with the Prince, is a band singer named Randy Watson(and his band is called Sexual Chocolate),he's a barber, and most impressively, he is a white man in the barber shop.Hall plays Semmi, who is Akeem's assistant and friend. He's a man in the barber shop, a hilarious Pastor, and has a cameo(for like 20 seconds) as a woman that wants to have sex with Akeem and Semmi. Oh, and by the way, Akeem's parents are the voices of Simba's parents in The Lion King, and Samuel L. Jackson has a cameo. Now, I've mentioned the comedy. Now what about the drama? Eddie Murphy is not all laughs in this, this has some great drama as well. I will let you spot it out for yourself. I cannot find a single critique for this movie, hence why it's my favorite Murphy movie. This is definitely a comedy to see. "Don't you know? We're Coming To America!"

(Flash Review)When having everything is not enough nor does not satisfy one's soul. This movie actually had a moral core that wasn't overshadowed by the comedy. Murphy plays Prince Akeem of Zamunda for which money is no object (in fact his face is on the money!), a multitude of servants await every command and his family literally walks on fresh rose petals. For Akeem, this form of opulent luxury doesn't truly fulfill him and when he is to be married to an attractive women, which he has no emotional attachment, he sets off to America to find a woman that meets his emotional desires. He aims for an impoverished armpit of a city in New York to shed his Prince persona. Will he find the emotional love? Can he hide the fact that he is a wealthy prince? This movie has many very funny scenes in the first act or two and slowly switches into a romantic drama with standard love story dramatic tension. Good screenplay for the genre. A true Murphy classic with many big name actors in small scenes during their youth.

Eddie Murphy starting make some appearances in disguised as the Barber Shop's crew...they stolen the movie, inventive and unique all the characters are funny and remarkable the owner lies all the time saying that have met a lot of famous people... denied at once by the others...the Jewish telling unfunny jokes....this kind of disguise became a Murphy's trademark for the next pictures!!! Anyway the movie is pretty good with a fine plot...Murphy and Arsenio Hall has a good performance as Prince and servant, the movie probable was in my opinion the Eddie Murphy's second best movie ever...but actually since the Norbit he is no longer funny as before....once more even l'd the official Special Edition released in DVD with a lot of extras it don't have the dubbed version available unfortunately...so go to Netflix!!!
