Joli M Every time I think I've seen my favorite of Gary Coopers' performances, I find yet another movie where he plays a stand-out character. City Streets is no exception. Maybe the earliest of his films I've seen thus far; there's a cockiness and confidence in his performance that is a bit grittier than one might expect coming from watching a handful of his newer movies. Examples that come to mind are "Meet John Doe," and "Great Balls of Fire," which both came out in 1941 (10 years after City Streets,). The confidence he carries in his role as "The Kid," is louder and more apparent than in these later films. But both the more quiet sense of assurance and the louder work as they need to in the roles he's given. The actress who plays his love interest, Sylvia Sidney or "Nan," also gives a very strong performance as a young woman who must save face and have nerves of steel to deal with the Gangster world she's been dragged into. Even in her few moments of weakness, she makes an effort to change the situation around her for the better. Every actor in this movie is so immersed in the reality of what they could lose (save for "Blackie" and "Pop", who aren't shaken my much of anything,) that you can immediately feel the weight of the world that these characters are tangled in together. Highly recommended!

jrich-37411 A mobster's daughter is in love with a not so wealthy shooting gallery showman. Nan has always tried to convince her boyfriend "the kid" to work with her father in the "beer" business. After assisting her father with hiding the evidence of a murder, Nan is placed in jail for being caught with her father's gun that was used for the murder. After spending time in jail and seeing all of the crime and what it can do to you, Nan has changed her mind about wanting "kid" to work with her father, but she may be too late.Once it gets going this film definitely keeps you on your feet. The mixture of crime and love is just enough to keep you interested. This movie shows how power can both change you and brainwash you.

aubrimmer The movie wasn't bad. The characters we alright but I wasn't too impressed with them. I guess it is because I have seen so many mob movies that I wasn't blown away by it. It did have some clever lines. What the director did do in this film was the interesting show of time with the clocks and going back and forth with different angles when shooting the scenes. The car scene at the end was really good with showing the car against the train, the person in the train, the conflict inside the car. The scene did a good job of balancing things leading up to the finally. The other notable scene was when Nan and Big Fella were in the room and the other woman was trying the listening on them but could only see. So you heard the city streets but not what was going on inside. Another scene I liked for the camera work was when Nan and Big Fella were dancing and the camera would follow them around the room so you could see the faces of Kid and the other women and how they were upset. Other than those scenes I wasn't too impressed with the movie. It was a mob movie and a had some quirky characters but their really wasn't much development of characters besides the Kid. I would recommend this movie to better appreciate the advancement of film in general. It wasn't a bad film, just a little underwhelming.

mikeneet Rouben Mamoulian brought together my personal favorite genre a great film with City Streets. Gary Cooper as The Kid delivers a fabulous job of holding the story along with real emotions. Throughout, Mamoulian introduces a new character with ties to the rest. All comes together so well for a fabulous film. Also loved Sylvia Sidney as Nan Cooley. A great support to Gary Coopers well balanced character portrait. Rouben seems like a director that made a couple simple great films that get overlooked. Yet for me City Streets is a solid great movie all around. Rouben brings along a solid plot. As well as great acting performances for the early 30s.
