Great Film overall

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

This came as a big surprise. Either I had previously seen it some time ago in a terrible print or I had only seen the many evocative b/w stills. Whatever, the pristine and beautifully shot movie unwound before me, glowing in its Blu-ray presentation. It is not the fastest moving film in the world and the story is only slight but wondrous image after image appear while the remarkable Candace Hilligoss performs so convincingly, often with only herself on screen. It is a stunning performance in that she convinces us of something unspoken and it must be said unresolved. Her inter action with others is also surprisingly effective in that in most ultra low budget films that mix young and old there is usually some disconnect, whether deliberate or not in that it is clear that the more mature performers are in some way slumming it. Not here and the exchanges in the doctor's office are particularly strong. So, the acting is good, the locations eerie and effective and the organ music suitably worrying. The salt lake and church settings are contrasted with the lodging house and unusual shapes and textures the Candace encounters and overall a very unsettling atmosphere is achieved. An original and influential work thats effect lingers well beyond the modest running time.

Put together on a shoestring budget and filmed in a short time, "Carnival of Souls" is an unusual film, envisioned by one industrial film maker who was inspired by a location he happened to see in Utah. The abandoned and creepy Saltair pavilion is the focus of this film that leads the viewer on a mysterious journey into the supernatural realm.Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) is a church organist "capable of stirring the soul", but she is remarkably unmoved by her profession. When she is the only survivor of an automobile accident, she leaves her home as if drawn westward. When she gets to Utah, she feels compelled to investigate an old carnival site. What follows is a compelling story in which Mary tries to unravel the truth about why she suffers inexplicable spells that affect her senses. She also experiences hallucinations.Filmed in black and white, "Carnival of Souls" is, foremost, a film of atmosphere. Most of the director's attention is spent on creating a chilling experience for the viewer, using empty interiors, dramatic lighting, evocative sounds and some unusual camera angles.Director and writer Herk Harvey, in his only artistic film production, fashioned a film that influenced many directors to follow, though it does not offer the glossy production values of mainstream films.

This movie was absolutes creepy because you could see what it feels like to have anxiety along with PTSD. I wouldn't like a creepy looking fella who looks like Heath Ledgers makeup as the joker in the Batman movie. I wouldn't even like to have people chasing after me especially a clown haunting me! Candace Hilligoss is such a talented actress on this like honestly I couldn't believe she didn't get an Oscar for this?!Seriously Hollywood doesn't care about the real good ones here! She honestly needs to be known as one of the best actresses here! A very good Halloween movie, happy Halloween folks!!!

The tagline reads :"She Escaped Death. Now It Wants Her Back!" Well, as far as I am concerned, "it" can have her. Cult classic or not, this was a really bad movie. It was like a poorly made Twilight Zone .. one of the ones that would never be shown even on those three day holiday marathons where they show all but the really crummy episodes. The "heroine" is a lump. She would have been the prompter at her High School Drama Club productions because she was so totally inept as an actress. Production values ? Director ? Budget for the film ? All seem to be missing. When the car goes off of the bridge, the girls scream before they are doing anything other than driving straight forward. The faces appearing here and there ? I have no clue even after watching the film twice. If you are a fan of bad movies. Go for it. Otherwise.. ummm .. no! OK I have to edit my review. I have read the others and an awful lot of them insist this is a masterpiece so I must ... heartily disagree. It's a mess.
