The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.

I know there are not many votes on this film but if there were it certainly would have a higher rating then a 6.0. The acting is excellent all the way around, the numerous plot twists and turns keep the viewer enthralled from beginning to end, and it leaves one with many questions to ponder afterward. As Francis' (Aidan Gillen) emotions begin to unravel it will blow your mind into the unavailing that comes about in the end. If you are a simple minded individual that enjoy movies for the loud explosions and eye candy this one may not be for you. This is in a class of maybe about a dozen movies that I couldn't get out of my head for days after viewing (Requiem for a Dream, Mysterious Skin, There Will Be Blood, American History X, The Machinist, The Wrestler, The Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, The Green Mile, The Prestige, Unbreakable, Revolutionary Road, Amores Perros, Happiness) Also Emmanuelle Sieigner may have the sexiest voice/accent that I have ever heard. She's a real babe in this one.Highly Recommended: 9.5/10

***MAJOR SPOILER*** Depressing film set in an anonymous Canadian, I think, city about a recluse who's life is quickly falling apart together with his sick and alcoholic step-mother.Francis, Aidan Gillem, find himself stuck taking care of his infirmed step-mom Sal, Susan Tyrell, who's becoming-in constantly demanding his complete attention-more then he can handle. There's also Sal's live in lover Vic, Mark Boone Jr, the handyman who made himself at home by using the lame excuse of fixing the bathtub which is now going on for some six weeks. It was for a while that Francis' deep religious convictions, instilled in him by Sal, kept him from going completely insane in the world of suffering and depression he finds himself in. Now with everything quickly falling apart Francis turns against his Catholic upbringing, as well as belief in God, feeling that its, in putting him in the mess that he finds himself in, the reason for all his problems. While not on his job at the local photo lab Francis spends his free time spying on his next-door neighbor Gloria, Emmanuelle Seigner, whom he's got, in her walking around her apartment in her underclothes, the hots for. It's later when Francis saves Gloria from being mugged that she, despite of his extreme shyness towards her, becomes fascinated as well as falls madly in love with him! Francis' relationship with Gloria, which at first is strictly platonic, starts to get under his step-mother Sal's skin. Always putting Francis on a guilt trip in him living in sin, even though both him and Gloria are single, is very hypocritical on her part to Francis. Sal is doing just that with her slobbery boyfriend Vic as well as getting drunk every day which is a bigger sin then what her step-son Francis is doing. Especially when drinking booze is, in the sorry condition that Sal's in, like slowly committing suicide which is a mortal sin in the Catholic Religion. It's later, while still spying on her, when Francis discovers or thinks he does that Gloria-a life long vegan- who told him she refrains from eating animal products eating raw meat that he completely freaks out and goes off the deep end. This leads to him also openly revolting against Sal that leads to her and Vic, who's completely oblivious to whats going on, to come to blows with him. During the knock down and drag out fight with Sal Vic ends up dead beaten to a pulp with Sal's, where she obviously keeps most of the booze she's drinking, wooden leg!***MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS*** Francis now ready for a straight-jacket and padded cell starts to find out, or does he, that Gloria is part of a cannibalistic cult that she invites over to her apartment to feast on human flesh! The movie is so ambiguous about Gloria's lifestyle and eating habits that your not quite sure if she's a cannibal or not but the by now deranged Francis is more then positive that she is! That's until he confronts Gloria alone in her apartment and finally finds out the truth which is purposely kept from those of us, by now totally confused to what's going on, watching the film! The movie "Buddy Boy" is a lot like that all time "Bad Movie" classic "Shrike of the Mulitated" but in its trying to be serious nowhere, intentionally or not, as funny. As hard as actor Adian Gillen tried he just wasn't that convincing as the nerdy and speech defected, by having a hard time stuttering, wallflower that he tried to concave to the audience. It's that very reason that should have been the most unconvincing part in the film in Gloria-a real hot number-falling heads over heels for Francis who wasn't that bad looking at all, in fact you can even say he was handsome, which wasn't that unconvincing at all!

A few years ago, Christmas of 2004 to be exact I was sitting down late at night channel surfing when I stopped on IFC to see that they were having some sort of movie marathon and this movie(Buddy Boy) was just beginning so I figured "Why not? There is nothing else on unless I want to watch A Christmas Story for the 32nd time." So as the movie flows through the opening credits, I am intrigued by the dark atmosphere it is already presenting so I put the remote down and continue to watch. About 20 minutes into the film I am engrossed in the increasingly gloomy mood about the film and the emotionally unstable characters it is presenting to me. Our main character Francis lives with his neglectful couch potato of a mother in an old dingy apartment where he isolates himself from any socialization and spends much time spying on the adjacent apartment through a hole in the wall in the back of his apartment. Throughout these viewings he notices an attractive female and becomes engrossed into continuously watching her until one day by chance they run into each other on the street where she introduces herself as Gloria and her and Francis begin their relationship and this begins the psychological roller coaster that is Buddy Boy.Throughout the film Francis becomes increasingly frustrated with his mother and himself while at the same time builds a closer relationship with Gloria and out of increased interest continues to spy on her through the peephole in his apartment and witnesses a series of disturbing events within her apartment that makes the viewer question the validity of the events or Francis' very own sanity. The excellent thing about this film it is a psychological thriller and it does its job very well continuously making the viewer wonder if what is going on in the screen is either actually happening or our main character is losing his mentality. The film keeps delving deeper into the psychological mess that is Francis and the bizarre events he views in Gloria's apartment which eventually builds up to the final confrontation that has an ending that may very well drive the viewer themselves insane. Overall the movie has a very interesting story that succeeds with superb acting and overall presentation. I highly recommend it to anybody in the mood for an original suspense story or just plainly a good movie.

Buddy Boy is a psychological thriller on the same scale of Roman Polanski movies. While seeing Buddy Boy it immediately reminded me of a particular Polanski movie, The Tenant. Both stories deal with men looking abroad to the windows of others and noticing bizarre happenings. Thus causes the men to slowly go insane and therefore indulge themselves within their own insanity.
The story deals with a stuttering young man who is very reclusive and lives with his stepmother. He spends most of the time locked in his room. A perverse pass time of his is to look inside the apartment of a beautiful woman, played by Polanski’s wife, Emmanuelle Seigner. He falls in love with the woman’s image without knowing her. As the story develops they eventually meet and become friends. The young man continues to spy on the woman due to his lack of trust in her. As he peeps into the woman’s apartment, he begins to notice that she cooks human flesh and eats it raw. He goes over the woman’s apartment, only to discover that she is eating vegetables, I forgot to mention the woman is a vegetarian. The young man begins to think God hates him for making him see terrible things. Apparently the only time he sees the acts of cannibalism is when he is at his Peeping Tom area. This is the beginning of one man’s decent into madness.I expected to see a particular type of stylish psychological film, instead I witnessed something more disturbing than what I usually see. Nevertheless it was an interesting movie. The style is ugly, its not elegant it’s simply ugly. So far I have not learned to like this particular style, I prefer something more elegant, meaning I dislike movies that take place in the rural areas of a metropolitan city. Despite the settings I thought the film was decent. It’s definitely a change of pace horror film instead of watching the typical teenage slasher Hollywood flicks. Which I don’t see but I’m sure they are terrible. Buddy Boy is a film that allows you to have your own conclusion, it doesn’t give you the ending, you create it yourself by what you saw from the flick.
