Best movie ever!

I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

Basically a couple of high school BFFs take a post grad trip to Thailand and meet a cute guy from Australia. He's a sleaze, but so are they. They end up both throwing him one, in sequence, within hours of meeting the lucky dude. Turns out he is not only using them for sex, but also for reasons more dangerous. This film would have been better as a spoof. There is one line that is sort of its pivot point, when Danes says "I wasn't that scared in jail, I''ve had worse hair cuts". They should have taken it from there and gone with the obligatory GIRL FIGHT:' Picture this : Beckensale " :shut up , clown nose, get your own man" Danes : f"stuff it, you pompous pixie nose Brit., without famous parents you'd be making BBC infomercials with that half sis of yours". Then they could spin round and round with a handful of hair. It could have been a slap stick bonanza, and they should have seized the day.Instead they go down the old movie of the week path, violins and all. The story is also sort of confusing, where its tough to tell who knew what when. Did they know about the drugs? Did one? Did both help plant it? I don't know if that is intentional, or if it's just bad writing. They also left you "hanging," literally, when it came to the "lesbe friends" overtones. Oh sure, Danes was pretty aggressive in some scenes (yikes), but they missed a golden opportunity to go anywhere with it.

Americans Alice and Darlene decide to take a trip to Bangkok to celebrate their high-school graduation, they are naïve when befriended by a charming Australian who convinces them to join him for a weekend trip to Hong Kong. At the airport they are busted, unjustly arrested, convicted and sent to prison for 33 years for smuggling heroin in Thailand. This movie, as well as being disturbing was visually stunning and also comes with a great soundtrack. Claire Danes is awesome, giving a near perfect performance in her role as the more headstrong of the two girls, (damn can she act) and the ending is absolutely haunting, I'm still thinking about it now days later. 07.13

I enjoyed this movie, despite of the fact that I am far past that age, when a girl friend could be the most important person in your world. One asks oneself the question: "how far would I have gone for a friend?" I say it in the past tense, because when one has children you cannot sacrifice for someone else than them, and a true friend - and a good partner also - will understand that.If I shall be absolutely honest, the answer is that I would NOT have sacrificed myself for any of the girls whom I, during my child-hood and youth, considered my best friends. Because I had my life plan clear to me, and I knew that even if my girl friend and I had fun at the time, the greater part of my life would be taken up by other people (husband and children at the foremost) and other things (such as my intended career). I would not have sacrificed all that for a friend, because I would have known that friends today are not friends tomorrow anyway. Maybe this proves me shallow? Or maybe I was just unlucky, who never met that wonderful girl who could have inspired those strong feelings of friendship and loyalty unto death..? We will never know, now...Except for this main theme, there were several other things I liked as well:the very good acting all around the way we got to see some of Thailand (I have never been there myself, so I am curious) the realistic, but still not unbearably depressing depiction of the Thai women's prison... in fact I believe the reality is worse the very realistic depiction about how the girls after a time became part of the prison and Thailand, how their friends and families despite of everything went on with their life at home, and how they did not have much to say to each other anymore when the friends and family came to visit the American lawyer, who started out very cynic, but proved he had human feelings as well the ending which was altogether unpredictable, but still not contrived. This is VERY unusual and last but not least: the way this story can act as a warning to other young and naive people, travelling in this part of the world. We have had several of these cases also with Swedish Tourist I found only one week point in this movie: the escape attempt. There was too little information there: who organized it, who would come with the escape vehicle, why did this not arrive, and who told on them? Well worth watching, especially in the company of your children, if they are teenagers or young adults!

To the first half of this I thought it was going to be a complete rip- off of "Red Corner", because they had such similar plot and story. Two young girls go to Thailand and end up being arrested for something they didn't do, just like in the film I mentioned-- OK, that was in China, a different country, but it's no big difference. Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale deliver a good job in showing their acting skills, I never heard about them before but I'm glad I'm aware of their work now. They are very believable in this flick, making you feel very sorry for them throughout the whole thing. I just felt it was poorly written when the girls were worried because they tried to scape from prison, which would add 15 years to their sentence-- what does it matter when you're already sentenced to life imprisonment? Soundtrack is touching and fits well in the scenes they are used, these great songs made this rating earn 1 or 2 points. Summarizing, the film is averagely good and the ending will make you feel very sad and moved for these girls...
