Platicsco Good story, Not enough for a whole film

Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

lovecraft231 When a Peace Corp Worker (former teen heartthrob John Ashley-good at fighting and getting the chicks, bad at acting), a doctor (Kent Taylor) and his lascivious wife (Beverley Powers) go to Blood Island, they find a bevy of problems-man eating trees that bleed, large (and very fake) insects, and of course, a creature that rapes and tears apart women.The first entry in the "Blood Island" movies, "Brides of Blood" is a blast of campy exploitation fun, with the right amount of sleaze and trash to help it go down. Sure, the acting is largely non-existent (with the exception of Taylor), the effects unbelievable, and the creature itself looks like H.R. Puffnstuff's satanic, mentally retarded brother. Yet, that's part of what makes it fun really. You aren't watching this expecting a good movie. You are expecting some enjoyable exploitation cheese, and that's what you get.The thing I really like about the movie (and the series) is it's ability to take 50's B-Movie plot lines (here involving that notorious culprit radiation) with 60's and 70's exploitation seamlessly. While hardly a gore-fest (you aren't going to confuse this with a H.G. Lewis movie), the moments that do occur will satisfy, as does the gratuitous female nudity and catchy score."Brides of Blood" won't win any awards, but then again, it doesn't strive to. It was followed by "Mad Doctor of Blood Island" (The best entry in th series), "Beast of Blood" (the weakest entry), and the so bad it's hilarious "Brain of Blood."

bjordan396 When I was little (the 70's), I used to love watching old horror films. Those were the days. They were on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons (in Chicago anyway). I remembered the "Blood Island" movies vaguely. I ordered this DVD and I am a satisfied customer.Three Americans travel to Blood Island. Upon arrival, they see that things aren't right. The villagers don't seem happy and there is a reason why.The movie arouses suspicion and sets an eerie atmosphere. I like John Ashley and he and Mario Montenegro give good performances. The DVD has a lot of fun trailers and extras. This is a unique and well done horror film. Check it out.

Mikel3 This film is a fun taste of late 60s low budget horror with a touch of 50s radiation phobia thrown in for good measure.The acting by at least two of the leads were good, the rest were passable. The monster makeup was low budget for sure, but it has a certain "wow that's soooo weird" charm to it. Those bright glowing red toy marble like eyes are especially memorable. Many films with modern CGI f/x have had a much lesser effect on me.The story is pretty predictable, but that doesn't matter much it makes up for it in weirdness, atmosphere and a bit of tropical eroticism. This movie is perfect for munching popcorn and pretending you're back in time at your favorite Drive-in. Hopefully you've got a date nearby to do a pretend yawn, arm-stretch, and cuddle with during the show. Love the movie trailers included on the DVD, especially the promo for the genuine *imitation* engagement and wedding rings given out to the movie goers of the time! 'Brides of Blood' get it. Wow, real plastic ! My guess is they were crackerjack box rejects. A trick probably even William Castle would have considered a cheap gimmick. (wink) If you enjoy B horror films this will not disappoint. Be sure to check out the trailers if you get your hands on the DVD.

dbborroughs This is the second of the Blood Island films after Terror is a Man. Its not related to that film, only loosely to the two films that follow, Mad Doctor of Blood Island and Beast of Blood. All the films are nominally set on a remote island in the Pacific where strange experiments happen.Here a research team arrives at Blood Island to find that the natives have begun to return to their old superstitions. The reason is that the far off atomic testing has mutated some of the plants animals and people into killing machines. They have taken it so far that the natives sacrifice two virgins every night to the man beast that wanders the woods.Edgy and atmospheric this is a monster movie in the grand tradition. You have weird things going on, sexual tension between the cast members, and monsters running amok, what more could you ask for? This movie was a drive-in staple for years and its easy to see why since it gives you everything that a drive-in crowd would want sex blood and breasts. Its also lots of run, creepy and just a bit scary.The only place the movie falls down is the man beast. Its really silly. It looks like a drippy Michelin man with a stupid grin Until you get a really good long look at it towards the end of the movie it holds some ,ystery and fear, but once we see its face its all over. If you can get past that, knowing its gonna look dumb helps, you'll have a grand time with this movie.
