Much as the title suggests, Beyond Vanilla explores the kinkier aspects of sex on the other side of vanilla. With interviews, demonstrations and a good dose of how-to instructions, this documentary covers the gamut of fetishes and SM practices. From bondage, flogging and fisting to knife play, fire and golden showers, director Claes Lilja takes us on an unforgettable journey to the wilder side of sex. Sharing fantasies, experiences and pleasures, the over 60 people interviewed in the film help to blur boundaries and shed new light on sexuality and sexual practices. Open your mind and the rest will follow...

Beyond Vanilla Audience Reviews

Perry Kate Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Micransix Crappy film
Aiden Melton The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
dbborroughs This is an exploration about anything thats "Beyond Vanilla" sexually. What this means is that anything other than normal sex (either straight or gay) This includes leather, piercing, bondage, spanking and several other things that would probably get me banned from IMDb for mentioning. This is not for kids or anyone who does not have an open mind. This film seeks to explore what turns people on and, perhaps, why.I'm not sure what I think of this film. Certainly its eye opening in its details and (very) graphic nature, but I'm not sure its very good. Essentially a collection of talking heads, with some demonstrations, both graphic and suggestive, it tells us a great deal, but I wasn't sure what it succeeds in what its trying to do. While I know its an attempt to bring to light "the chocolate side" of people's sex drive, it falls down on any notion that these subjects cross all sexual orientations and genders. The problem is that most of the people interviewed seem to be men, there are only handful of women on screen. This under cuts the notion (and reality) that these things are the enjoyed by people of all genders and sexual persuasions.Adding to the film's trouble is the "infomercial" style the film often adopts. While the style was clearly dictated by the circumstances, the film and the subjects are somehow lessened as a result I didn't hate the film, but I didn't find it all that great either. If you're curious, and very open minded and not disturbed by graphic depictions of sex of all varieties (and I do mean all) then you might want to try it, but if you're "vanilla" then you'll want to stay away from this film.
d2x2 Fair play to the guy who shot Beyond Vanilla, he took a risk.On the other hand the production is so bad, the film quality is very low, there is no script, no structure, no insight into the psyche of people interviewed and their movie for getting involved in kinky play. Some pictures are in for shock value but add nothing to the essay. Apart from the main man showing off in a leather cap, was there any reason to shoot - and show- this movie?
WLAHOTTOP An impressive insight into the psyche of kinkier sex. These interviews seem to really touch the truths people feel and experience, and it's refreshing to hear. Stimulating but not pornographic, informative without judging, and professionally done, I thought it was terrific!!
ericfisteur I saw this film in the festival here in Bruxelles and I was very impressed to learn so much. It is the best film about sex I have ever seen. Now I want to see part 2! The best thing was to learn about techniques and also see the people do it. I recommend this film.
