Behind Enemy Lines is one of the most underrated movies of all time. Owen Wilson delivers a performance of a lifetime; Gene Hackman is his stalwart best and I fail to comprehend why this movie does not stand among the ranks of popular titles such as Black Hawk Down and American Sniper since you will find this movie as exciting and recounts the true sequence of events that led to the U.S. bombing of Serbia. The plot builds in the final stages of the Serbian invasion of Bosnia in 1995 and how an American F/A-18 veers off cours (as part of NATO mission on recon missions documenting all they witnessed) spots war machine buildup - the Serbians running a charade of lie, deceit and ethnic cleansing of the Bosnian people didn't want this secret to be out, send potent Russian SAMs and bring down the U.S. jet. The Serbs locate the ejected pilots while murdering one look for the other (Navy flight officer Lieutenant Chris Burnett), who is now on the run for his life) while blame the whole episode on the Bosnians. Then ensues one of the most heart-pounding chase of Burnett by the barbaric Serbian forces. The movies attempts to show with restraint and bravado, the real tale of the Serbian leadership committing war crimes and genocide of the Bosnian people with Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic at the helm and their murdering forces who ravage Bosnia with the cover of fake diplomacy and lobbying with help from the Russians. This diplomatic scheme prevents the U.S. to officially recover Burnett and/or take any action. Back aboard USS Carl Vinson Admiral Reigart (Gene Hackman) appears helpless in recovery of his pilot since all his patriotic attempts were thwarted by a corrupt ranking French Admiral (Joaquim De Almeida) overrules any discussion leading to recovery of Lieutenant Burnett. This movies combines the trails of diplomatic jousting with heart-stopping on the ground war action in what can be termed as an epic and deserved more viewership if not on the account of a solid war movie then on the merits of bringing the truth to the fore about the genocide of the Bosnian people and the bold steps taken by President Bill Clinton with U.S.-led airstrikes against a terrorist regime of Serbia and helping end the rape and murder of innocent Bosnian people and for that Director John Moore and Writer Jim Thomas deserve a lot of credit. In my books this movie ranks among the very best and on the merits of the movie itself deserves 7.8/10In closing this is the best 106 mins. of entertainment and educating that you can bring to your couch and understand the basics of American intervention and eventually appreciate why America is the voice of all disadvantaged people of this world.

A Navy navigator is shot down over enemy territory and is ruthlessly pursued by a secret police enforcer and the opposing troops. Meanwhile his commanding officer goes against orders in an attempt to rescue him. Behind Enemy Lines (2001) is an underrated Masterpiece that unfortunately was criticized cause of the Propaganda but it is truly a great movie and the Casting is perfect. Owen Wilson gives an amazing performance as the main pilot who falls behind enemy lines and Gene Hackman once again is amazing as the commanding officer that tries to rescue him. The film is full of action and suspense from both aspects of the Pilot and the Commanding Officer because one tries to stay alive and the other tries to go against his commands and rescue the pilot. As i wrote in my summary the movie contains one of the coolest slow mo sequences ever and it's during the scene where a soldier stomps on a mine and slowly we start seeing him turning and turning as the explosion happens and it's truly something terrific for a movie that was made in 2001. Plus Owen Wilson has a moment of bravery where he kills a tracker in a spectacular way and then World War III basically starts once the Choppers come in. Overall this is one hell of a movie and like i just wrote it's just a "movie" don't take everything so seriously and hate it just because it's America and Propaganda it's one hell of an action film and an even better thriller/survival film. Made just six years after the end of the Bosnian War (1992-95), "Behind Enemy Lines" is a modern-day war-action film. It doesn't involve troops in combat, but the forces of one of the combatants pursuing a downed American pilot who was flying a photo mission. It was a time when the combatant forces were supposed to be non-aggressive, but the pilot spots illegal troop movements of Serbian forces when he flies over an area outside his authorized zone. He gets shot down by an anti-aircraft missile.I give this film six stars solely for the action, however unrealistic it may seem. And, because of the message that the Navy admiral was not going to abandon one of his men. In this day and age, that's a message that our military need to know, especially if the U.S. is going to rely solely on a volunteer, professional armed forces.My rating is probably stretching it, on the basis of accuracy. I don't know fighter aircraft or Navy operations, but I could see basic mistakes in several portrayals. I was an Army paratrooper many years ago, and the apparent lack of common sense and disregard or lack of knowledge of evasion and escape training by the downed pilot was frustrating to watch. Other reviewers – former Navy pilots and veterans have pointed out some of the many technical and military flaws of Lt. Chris Burnett, played by Owen Wilson. And, of the crew of the carrier.Gene Hackman is OK as the admiral, and the rest of the cast are OK for the roles they have. I think some of the Serbian portrayals are overboard. But, the film is packed with action. Had the filmmakers worked to get accurate portrayals of the carrier crew, proper equipment, correct aircraft, and survival procedures, this could have been a very good film.

This movie has a plot that could have been interesting if done right. Unfortunately it was done badly.A recon pilot and co-pilot disobey orders by departing from his assigned flight path over Bosnia. They get shot down by bad guys operating in a demilitarized zone where they have been murdering civilians. One of the two (didn't ever figure out which) is injured, found by the bad guys who shot down the plane. They shoot the good guy. The remaining good guy was climbing a hill to establish radio contact with his aircraft carrier. He sees the shooting. He screams out loud at the sight of it, thus betraying his position. The rest of the movie is about him evading the bad guys pursuing him. Of course he is a superman and the bad guys are knuckle-dragging idiots, so evil the Devil himself would shun their company. The admiral on the aircraft carrier overrides orders and sends out rescue mission of a few attack helicopters. Just as all admirals, he joins the mission. Acting as the modern day cavalry, the copters arrive just in the nick of time to save our hero from capture by the bad guys, blowing up tanks with their missiles and machine gunning lots of bad guys. The movie ends with some written remarks that try to give the impression this was a true story and the people in it were real.Another war movie in which the lopsided depictions of the two sides and the truly ridiculous ending add the final touches of banality to what otherwise was only mildly entertaining.Read the "Hated It" reviews for more details about the numerous failings.
