Becoming Jane Audience Reviews

CheerupSilver Very Cool!!!
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Raymond Sierra The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
Hager Ahmed I can't say that I actually know much about Jane Austen, but I know quite well that she was an honorable English novelist that has left a great mark, and that's why I was expecting much more than what I've experienced in the movie. A movie about such a great writer, I think, should be more dramatic, sophisticated and elegant. There is no enough emotion or monologue in the movie to get the viewer into the character as in any other touching biography. In contrary, the movie is a kind of prosaic for me and humorous in a bad way. It would have been better if it was more deep and sentimental as for an admired writer. Personally I don't think that this is an appropriate biography for a remarkable writer; it did not enrich me, and sadly the movie is just light, tasteless, superficial and a kind of disappointment.
juneebuggy Beautifully filmed, perfectly acted, the costumes and attention to period detail are amazing but there's also just something missing, and honestly its a little boring. Becoming Jane is a speculative portrait about a young, love struck (pre-fame) Jane Austin and centers around the romance she had with a penniless Irish Lawyer. At times I felt like I'd seen this all before and while I should have been all caught up in Jane and Tom's ill-fated romance I was kinda meh, whatever about it. Although that formal dance they have together was something else (its all in the eyes.) It is a good movie and the entire cast is fantastic; James Cromwell, James McAvoy, Joe Anderson, Maggie Smith and I really got a feeling of being transported back to 1795. What a frustrating time to be a woman. 01.18.14
phoenix 2 The movie shows the life of Jane Austen before she became a writer, her relationship with Mr Lefroy and her struggles with her family. The movie deserves and A for effort. The costumes are good, the scenario's perfect, the set accurate, the supporting roles great. But those are not enough to make you over look the main problems: -The story line is confusing at some points as the love story's development is sudden and out of the blue. -The performances of the leading actors are bad. Or maybe I was destructed by the luck of accent. Jane has no English accent, or a bad one at least, and Tom, well, he supposed to be Irish, but he sounds more like a Londoner. - The make up is bad also, there soon have been made a better work especially with the on the future scene. - The story gets boring after the first arguments of the characters. So 3 out of 10, because it was in the mood of the Jane Austin films, but that just wasn't enough.
eagleeyedcritic This movie was a huge disappointment and was by far the worst movie about Jane Austen ever made.I saw someone defend in their review that they didn't have much historical information to base it on however that hardly excuses such a complete disregard for the time period and also for such poor writing when portraying such an amazing woman as Jane Austen. Even without a historical basis as to the romance it isn't hard to realize what a character Jane was by her writing.Another defense I saw in a review was the lack of a sex scene. I've seen numerous period pieces that do not have sex scenes and that has nothing to do with the movie not being sexy enough. The build up in other period pieces such as Persuasion or Pride and Prejudice... the restraint... these are common for the times and still lend a great sense of sexual tension... which is partially relieved when they finally kiss or confess their love. Sex isn't needed to get this point across. This movie lacked it all - there was no sexual tension, no chemistry... it was a big yawn in all ways.It is bleak, boring and depressing. They make out that the man she was interested in was much more than she ever was yet that isn't saying much as I found him anything but lovable. He is arrogant, a womanizer, etc... and she is bland and boring. The other inaccuracies in this movie are astounding. E.g. Her reaching for a kiss first and then asking if it were good enough? Please! This would never happen. Or showing her playing a man's sport with her pantaloons showing as she runs about. Her treating the man courting her so badly. There are many more - far too many to list.Save yourself the time and trouble and watch a movie worth watching such as one of Jane Austen's.
