Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Audience Reviews

SoftInloveRox Horrible, fascist and poorly acted
Pluskylang Great Film overall
Calum Hutton It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Fatma Suarez The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
timothytoliver This is an hour and 15 minute episode of batman the animated series with a little more punch than the t.v episodes,if you watched the show on t.v when you were a kid you remembered the hype.you saw the box at your local video rental store. I'm pretty sure I never watched this as a kid. if I did and forgot. or was not able to follow it because the story wasn't keeping my attention then really not much has changed of course I take note of more detail as an adult.this movie is not bad.but its not pined in my memory bank I cant really remember much to even give a really detailed review. I guess that's not good.but if your a fan of the franchise I say of course watch it. lets like it.its batman the animated series from the 90's.ok so the title the cover mask of the phantasm.great title great poster.but it looks like to me that the main villain in this movie is the joker who is not on the poster or in the title.the phantom guy who isn't a guy is this batman teams production version of a batman villain called the reaper.I cant remember anybody in this movie calling the main new character of this movie by any name you find out that its bruce waynes love interest that he tries to marry.I watched a batman episode in season 4 with a new character called the judge and I'm getting my memory confused with that and this movie because its similar. anyway its lie the title of this review if your a batman fan from the 90's show watch it so you can say that you've seen it.5 stars
Eric Stevenson I feel bad for never having watched "Batman: The Animated Series" but I did enjoy the "Justice League" cartoon very much. This is a great movie because it doesn't really reference the show even to make the audience confused as to what is going on. Then again, I guess everyone is so familiar with the Batman mythology there's probably no reason to do that anyway. The best thing about this is the fantastic animation. It makes me miss the days where every beloved animated show got a theatrically released movie based on it, but now most TV shows haven't switched to CGI like movies. It's easily the best movie I've seen for Superhero Month. Another great thing is how well this film works as an origin story.True, it doesn't show Batman's direct origin, but we get to see through flashbacks a gradual change that makes Bruce Wayne don the costume. It's great to see him actually propose to someone, although we all know it didn't work out. I had in fact heard of the twist ending, but it's still tons of fun to watch. It truly did remind me of the classic Max Fleischer superhero cartoons and how beautifully animated they were (although they did stuff with Superman, not Batman). My only complaint is that the movie is too short! It was so epic I wanted to see more! Still, it's definitely worth your time and probably my second favorite Batman movie next to "The Dark Knight". ***1/2
Leofwine_draca BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM is widely regarded as one of the finest of the animated BATMAN films, but having just finished watching it I'm rather surprised as I didn't think it was up to much at all. As an early 1990s production this looks and feels rather cheap and dated, and only the efforts of a talented voice cast tend to make it watchable.Sadly many of the actors are reduced to giving gratingly over the top pronunciations, with the exception of Mark Hamill who does a very good job as the Joker. Otherwise, it's business as usual, with Batman on the trail of a vigilante whose brutal murders are being blamed on him. I found this rather slapdash in places with barely any effort having gone into the characters or the backdrops; the result is distinctly underwhelming.
Johnny H. Mask of the Phantasm is one of the greatest, and criminally under-appreciated, Batman films ever made. It tells a heartfelt story about The Dark Knight which wasn't done like THIS before Batman Begins came along: Bruce Wayne was once a young man in love, trying to balance his personal life with that as a vigilante protecting Gotham City. Batman has secrets that he hides just like his identity. Andrea Beaumont is one of those memories Bruce keeps looking back on throughout the movie, and she really did change his life until she had to leave him. Little does Bruce know that she is still affecting his life as Batman: the Phantasm has been killing gangsters in the underworld, and we learn that Andrea is the Phantasm. This movie is one of the very best animated films I have seen; I kept re-watching it on VHS in the 90s as a kid, and even now it is still entertaining for me. It compliments the Batman: The Animated Series perfectly while also standing on its own just fine. Mark Hamill is still wonderfully chilling as The Joker's voice, Kevin Conroy IS Batman in this film, and Bob Hastings gives Jim Gordon's minimal role real impact on how Batman affects Gotham-life, being a committed voice of reason.Mask of the Phantasm has a great, emotionally complicated story and enough mystery around it to warrant a second viewing for any first-timers.If you loved The Dark Knight Trilogy, want something new and haven't seen this, DON'T MISS OUT!
