Well, it's quite known past that in 1990's Shahrukh Khan was very well known for portraying any role he is served. He started off his career on an average note and then became popular by doing some terrific performances in movies like Darr, Baazigar, Dil Toh Pagal Hai etc. But there were films which could have downed SRK in a very terrible way. There is this Anjaam which falls in the later category. Well, yes movies are carried out by Actors and their performances. But sometimes they ain't that responsible for the flop of a movie. Directors are equally responsible for the same. Even though knowing very well that movie Darr which was a landmark in the film history of Bollywood was made so beautifully and released just a year before, why did Rahul Rawail chose to make another movie on revenge with similar premises? If this movie has hot some popularity that's only because of SRK and Madhuri Dixit in it. Anjaam has very similar concept and nearest to that of Darr if not just a remake of it. The only difference is there's some more and terrible brutality and there's some more role of leading actress which was missing in Darr. But that doesn't mean it is sufficient to make a hit movie. Many other things fall flat and underused so badly. For an instance, SRK is just pathetic to see. I think SRK alone would have carried the whole movie but director didn't give him free hands to do the charm and that made his skills overused. Having seen lots of varieties of movies Anjaam had worst possible execution of screenplay. There can be lots of comparisons made with Anjaam to Darr. Like Darr was a psychological thriller where it could be enjoyed notoriety by SRK. Here, in Anjaam the notoriety looks like he's forced to do and he's so unnatural. I think Rahul Rawail just misused SRK and that should be known by him. Again the second half which literally takes a different take which looks like movie is going to offer some good topics. But it lets down so badly. Women Empowerment is shown pathetically. The old Bollywood style super power enveloping by actress by the grace of some Goddess and taking revenge is just lame to see. So creating two faced movie from both the sides offering Actor and Actress rise and show caliber doesn't work. I just wished SRK and Madhuri Dixit shouldn't have accepted this film and should have concentrated in Dil Toh Pagal Hai.

I didn't like this film initially, because it IS rather violent in the second half. The only thing I did like from the start was the "Badi Mushkil Hai" song, which is absolutely great. And the unpredictable ending. I didn't like it per se, story-wise, just the fact that there are all these twists. I was kinda hoping for redemption and stuff... though I knew that it would have been implausible after everything that had happened.I re-watched the film and it strangely grew on me. It's now among my favorites because of its complexity. It's really interesting from the psychological point of view. Did Vijay love Shivani or was it pure whim? I think the latter... Was Vijay really nuts and psychotic or just spoiled rotten? Shivani insists that he's just an idiot but Shahrukh definitely played him as not quite normal. How is it that he manages to evoke sympathy even for such a diabolical character? Was Shivani at least partly to be blamed for what happened to her? I'd never think so (the "blame the victim" attitude) but the lyrics in the "Chane Ke Khet Mein" song are a bit strange. And then those words she says to her sister at the beginning of the film: "Don't blame the fate. Sometimes a person can lose their life because of one wrong step". (don't remember the correct phrasing) I basically think it was the combination of unfortunate circumstances and her "no-nonsense, stand up for oneself" character. The film is full of foreshadowing, subtext, and I liked its stance on the position of women.So... SRK is brilliant, Madhuri is brilliant, songs are great, there aren't many unnecessary scenes (I actually love Johnny Lever here, ... singing "Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein" from Baazigar). It's a really interesting and powerful movie.

This film began in a typical bollywood fashion with two attractive leads (Madhuri and Shahrukh) in opposing roles, (and some very enjoyable dance sequences thrown in) until it took a dark turn that I began to recognize from an older French film. I would encourage anyone who hasn't seen "The Bride wore Black" (1968) to see it first. While Anjaam is not a remake, the theme of revenge is handled similarly in the second half... systematic extermination of villains (and there are many of them), but with one very remarkable difference: the shocking level of violence.Anjaam is unforgettable for me if only for the fact that the female character, played excellently by Madhuri Dixit (usually docile, beautiful, present only for the entertainment of men in her other movies) evolves into an almost superhuman avatar of revenge. And when she finds that she has been robbed of her chance to face her greatest enemy as an equal, she cries, but does not weaken in her resolve.Shahrukh's character Vijay, while less attractive than his obsessed would be lover role in Darr, is far more realistic in this film. His resolve to "destroy what he cannot have" rings true to life. How many times do we see this kind of choice being made in real life? His violent attack on Shivani makes him a true villain. The ending is a bittersweet tragedy. I recommend it.

Anjaam is a Great underrated Movie with attitude. Shah Rukh Khan plays the obsessed phycho lover after Baazigar and Darr. Both were Great Films, Anjaam is another Hit added to his list. Shah Rukh Khan delivers a powerful and great performance. Madhuri Dixit gives another powerful and Superb acting as the women who goes through many bizarre incidents. She gets framed for murder and ends up in a brutal prison. The Prison is used like a brothel in nights, focusing in police corruption. One of the serious Scenes include, when a 9 Months Pregnant Madhuri gets beaten like crazy, she gets whacked in the stomach by the corrupt Police by a stick. Madhuri goes on a quest for revenge, Lots of Violence including the death of her brother in law. Madhuri bites his hand so badly, that his skin comes off.I expected this to be a romantic movie, with a bad guy that likes a married women. Instead, i see a serious movie that kicks ass. Great acting and madness of a storyline. Worth the watch.
