Admirable film.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review

This was a great movie. There are lessons on many levels. Mostly on the human relations level and relationships between humans and animals. I wondered if I would like it, but I really appreciated it. It isn't necessarily the type of movie I usually watch, but it was well worth the time. Redford, Lopez, and Freeman did great jobs in ringing their characters to life. All the "minor" characters were portrayed by the actors portraying them. I know Doug Seus; he has a great respect for the wilderness and the animals in it. He cares deeply about them and his and Lynne's efforts, I know, are appreciated by anyone who cares about the West and the problems facing this area. I'm sure that anyone viewing this film will come away from it feeling better about their viewing experience.

It's too bad this movie never really had a big theater presence. I happened to find it on Netflix and was pleasantly surprised. You see J-Lo's name and think "ugh", and then Redford & Freeman "Hello!", but everyone is great in this movie and very believable. First I thought it was only going to be about the Woman & her Daughter running from an abuser, but it turned out to be so much more......an angry man who lost a son, a friend who is stuck in a damaged body, death, life, BEARS (lol!).It's heartfelt, simple, nothing fancy, but really makes you think about wasting time.

Ebert and Roeper gave this two thumbs up, which enticed me to borrow it from our library. They were right! This simple story is packed with terrific performances from Redford and Freeman. They run a ranch in a small town in Wyoming. Freeman was wounded and Redford is dutifully taking care of his friend. Suddenly J. Lo shows up, with a young girl in tow, seeking a place to stay as she escapes from an abusive boyfriend. The story unfolds methodically. Each character reveals that they have pain they experienced, yet Redford is the only one who can't get past it. He also has trouble accepting family that don't exactly match his desired behavior and image. Redford gives an Oscar-worthy performance. He's much better in these types of films than when he plays a bad guy. See him in The Horse Whisperer for a similar strong role. Freeman is equally excellent, bestowing words of wisdom with his special voice as only he can. The back and forth banter will have you chuckling continuously as these two old coots show you they know everything about each other, and that they can still handle themselves when trouble happens.Kudos to Bart the Bear. Watch the special feature to see how Bart2 was raised and train. It's amazing. Freeman shows a special reverence for this bear, and in his role, works towards forgiveness.Do yourself a favor and watch this wonderful film. I wish there were more films like this. Enjoy.

Its a story about forgiveness. Its about how Einar (Redford) tries to forgive his daughter-in-law Jean (Jennifer Lopez). The story happens in a hillside village where a bear that hit Einar's close friend Mitch (Morgan Freeman) once and wounded him badly. All these have something intertwined between them. Fate. Forgiveness.I liked this movie's tone. It is not compelling anything to the audience. No overdone or dramatized emotions. No tear-filling performances. But different ones. Simple family emotions. To this simple story this gives a feeling that 'nothing happened' at all. But that's what life is for most of us. Nothing happened but everything is changed thereafter.Morgan Freeman (e.g. moments before the bear),Robert Redford, Becca Gardner, Jennifer Lopez.. sorted order of likable performances. If you liked the Director's earlier movies then there is a good chance that you would like this movie. I liked the director's narration style. Its a very under-toned style. That makes it impossible to forget the characters for me. For you ? Watch and find out.
