All Through the Night Audience Reviews

Senteur As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
Calum Hutton It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Logan By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Francene Odetta It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
alexanderdavies-99382 Humphrey Bogart battles a secret Nazi organisation in this 1942 comedy/thriller. Bogart was by now a star, courtesy of "The Maltese Falcon" movie from the previous year. "All Through the Night" is undemanding fun, intrigue and thrills all the way. Young actors like Phil Silvers and Jackie Gleason make early film appearances and for "Warner Bros" regular Frank McHugh, it was one of his last regular films. Bogart and his New York mob stumble upon a group of Nazis who plan to overthrow the city. There are many scenes involving skirmishes with the enemy and encounters with a pretty, young female. One of my favourite bits, is when Bogart and one of his men manage to escape the clutches of the Nazis by the skin of their teeth! Conrad Veidt makes for a marvellous villain and Peter Lorre is his usual creepy self! The pace enables this film to rattle along quite agreeably and there are some funny moments too.
Dan Franzen (dfranzen70) All through the Night, one of Humphrey Bogart's lesser-known films, is an often-funny, tightly written spy caper wherein our antihero, playing "promoter" Gloves Donahue, finds himself in the middle of a nest of Nazis trying to sabotage a battleship in New York City.It seems that local baker Joe has been murdered by persons unknown. Then Leda (Kaaren Verne), a mysterious woman, shows up looking for Joe. Gloves, at the behest of his well-meaning Ma (Jane Darwell), looks into the matter, but soon he's suspect number one himself. What will happen when Gloves finds out who's behind Joe's murder? Who is this dizzy dame with the cool accent? And when will Gloves figure out that Nazis are involved? The answers may not surprise you.Surrounding Gloves are characters straight out of Damon Runyon or Chester Gould's Dick Tracy. His right-hand man is named Sunshine (William Demarest, not known for his sunny attitude). His gofer and second top accomplice is Barney (Frank McHugh), who throughout the film begs Gloves to give him a few minutes' leave to be with his girl - whom he marries during the movie and who's on screen for maybe five minutes. That's the life of a wiseguy. Also among Gloves' crew are a waiter (Phil Silvers) and Starchy, played by the one and only Jackie Gleason, billed with a middle initial of C. for this early role.On the bad-guy side of the ledger is ringleader Franz Ebbing (Conrad Veidt), his top man Pepi (Peter Lorre), and maybe Leda. Others, too, but they're not consequential. The ring operates out of a high-class auction house, where Sunshine and Gloves are just a tad out of place. But the dialog! Just check out some of the zingers. When Gloves spots a portrait of Hitler on the wall at the gang's headquarters - and this is before Pearl Harbor - he exclaims, "I recognize the face but I don't know where to put it. Hey, there's more here than meets the FBI!" When Barney is rebuffed again about trying to see his girl/wife, he laments having to spend his honeymoon with Sunshine, who deadpans, "Well, I can cook." It's a treat to see such tough, hardened baddies whip out such jumping lines.Essentially, this is a propaganda film made to convince America to join in the fun that would later be called World War II, but it's never over the top. It dabbles in patriotism and focuses its energy on the thrill of the spy chase and the juice of busting up terrorists. And terrorists these are, even in the modern sense, as a suicide bombing comes into play near the end. It's not one of Bogie's better-known films, but All through the Night is absolutely terrific. You tend to forget how gifted the man was at comedy (see his later We're No Angels, for example). He's got the moves, he's got the patter, he's got the girl, and he's got the moxie. Great job all around.
SnoopyStyle Gloves Donahue (Humphrey Bogart) is the boss of a gambling gang. His favorite food is Miller's cheesecake. When Miller refuses to continue to help in a mysterious conspiracy, Pepi (Peter Lorre) kills him. A mysterious girl comes looking for Miller at the bakery. Gloves' mother is Miller's neighborhood friend and finds out that the mysterious girl is nightclub singer Leda Hamilton. Gloves takes up the case investigating the beautiful Leda. Her piano player turns out to be the killer Pepi. Joe from the nightclub barges in on Leda being manhandled by Pepi. Joe is shot and tells Gloves that they took Leda with his dying words. Gloves leaves his glove at the murder scene and he becomes the prime suspect. Gloves continues to investigating as he uncovers a Nazi plot of sabotage. This is fun little espionage crime drama. Bogart is what makes this works so well. Peter Lorre is as ever the perfect sweaty villain. Kaaren Verne is a functional damsel in distress. There is an easy sense of humor. It is broadly comedic to offset the serious nature of the war effort at the time. This is just a fun anti-Nazi adventure.
LeonLouisRicci Your Enjoyment of this Movie will Depend on Your Tolerance for Blending very Serious Subject matters with Dated, Cringe Inducing Humor and Slapstick, all delivered at a Dizzying Pace. It can Work with Black Comedy, become Successful with Sophisticated Construction and not this Type of Silliness. The Three Stooges can pull it off because Their Outrageous Offerings are Not Obfuscated by Dramatizing. The Superstar Cast was probably ready to lend Their Talents to the Propaganda effort and They all seem to be "on" and give it Their All. But, the above mentioned Mix is a Bitter Sweet Dish of an Uncomfortable Union of a Cheer-Leading Chorus of Patriotism and a "Concentration Camp" Reality that was a Contemporary Suffering. It's a Worthy effort but as Entertainment it is best looked at as a Curio-So and a Manufactured Manifestation of Artistic Angst. The Reality was a Horror and a Nightmare that, at the time, was being Painfully Endured by Enemies of Fascism.
