As Good As It Gets

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The movie really just wants to entertain people.

A lot! This movie is rated as low as it can possibly go, and that is because these people rather watch a boring found footage, or drawn out take the whole movie to do something and nothing happens to the last 10 minutes and they call that better movie. That is where they are totally stupid and wrong.Sitting there watching the whole movie and nothing happens, that is a boring movie. That is a waste of time. At least thing had something happening throughout the movie. So sick of great movies rated low because of this crap. They should never be allowed to rate movies.Violence is always better than nothing at all happening. So sick of found footage praised, and boring nothing happening movies praised. This movie is about trying to figure things out and why and who is the killer, and when you find out, you are like whoa. Also, still this site does not force mandatory rate or votes. Still lame as heck, because it still shows bad reviews and ratings. How can they still want this site to suck because of that? I mean it does not suck but the ratings do. They will never be accurate because of this.

There are moments in the adolescence when a boy gets so infatuated by a girl that it seems he has never seen a woman in his life, but there are girls who know how to take advantage of it. This is, roughly, the theme of this film, where a teenager girl seduces several boys with rather dubious intentions. Nothing new, therefore. It's just another teen movie, full of sexual cues (direct or veiled), violence and stereotypical characters that exist only to die. What I don't understand is why Mandy Lane appears as an irresistible and seductive woman when, in fact, she is just a girl who loves to tease the boys. Do boys love being treated like idiots? The movie tries to surprise at the end with a plot twist, but the attentive viewer already foresaw it for some time. Amber Heard is excellent at her character and could have done better if she had received more dense and consistent material to work with. The rest of the cast is on the borderline between the acceptable and the mediocre. This film lacked a better development of the plot and the characters, so it all seems a bit meaningless.

While it is all well and good to do "clever" films like Cabin in the Woods that de-construct the genre, the real challenge is to the film right from the getgo. Here I think the very talented director Jonathan Levine succeeds. Possibly the best slasher flick in decades.Aside from a really tight script, and direction/cinematography on par with a Hollywood "A" flick, we also have generally top-rate performances from the young cast.Of particular interest is Anson Mount, five years before Hell on Wheels, stealing every scene that is not otherwise nailed down.Years ago a reviewer said that the test of a good slasher film is whether, in spite of the body count, the viewer would want to be in the film because everyone seems to be having a good time time. This film passes that test.

I don't know why all the boys love Mandy Lane?!This is a slash thriller with a twist at the end. It's filled with clichés and conforms to a lot of stereotypes that you'd expect in film made about (and presumably for) late teens/ early twenty-something's. The film follows Mandy Land (Amber Heard). A young girl at high school or college (I don't understand the American educational system enough to care). Mandy Lane is young, blonde and slowly growing into her body and developing. She popular enough not to be an outcast, she's athletic and she's not a social recluse. The only thing we don't find out during the scenes of her at high school is how good her grades are and if she's actually clever - which could have made the ending more credible - but I'm not going to spoil the ending. All the boys want to get with her, she's a prize that's highly sought after. The film could have been called "All the boys want to F*** Mandy Lane" as most of the boys were driven by this desire throughout the film. When the young boys weren't trying to get in her panties they were practically raping her with their eyes. One jock takes it too far and manages to kill himself while showing off in an attempt to bed Mandy. Flash forward 9 months from that incident and Mandy is now liked by the cool kids (who are never actually cool, they're usually just mean and enjoy sex and drugs). She is invited to a ranch with the cool kids, perhaps for a summer break but frankly I didn't listen or care. Once the cool kid and Mandy arrive at the ranch the drug intake increases, the sex and flirting is ramped up and things start to go slowly wrong. The cool kids are killed off one by one until the end. As I've mentioned there is a twist towards the end of the film which tries to explain while startling the audience. Unfortunately anyone who has watched enough films will be able to guess the conclusion and won't be shocked at all. Perhaps if you are virgin to film like the Mandy Lane is to virgin surrounded by the cool kids then there may be some thrills in the conclusion. What this film lacks is a soul. I found myself getting bored easily and rooting for the killer to wipe everybody out, quickly. The film was about as exciting as the blank look behind some of the stars of the films eyes while they were spitting out their dull dialogue. Seriously the script and the dialogue may have been written by children or stoners but if you are relying on the narrative to drive forward due to the lack of physical thrills then you'll be disappointed. Amber Heard comes out of this film with a little credibility for her portrayal of Mandy in the first half of the film at least, she knows that she's desired and her acting skills have her portraying herself as aware of her desirability but not wanting to cause problems at the same time. She manages to politely rebuff advances and seems believable in the deliverance of this part of her.Did I enjoy the film? No, not really, it passed an hour or so but I don't think I'd watch it again and I wouldn't recommend other people watch it. If you want to watch a good slasher film stick to the old classics, look up the original Halloween… in fact you could watch "Scream" or "I know what you did last summer" which grated on my nerves but are still both better than this film. Apart from Amber Heard the other good quality this film brought was some lovely cinematography; roving shots of mid American landscape, lovely tracking and craning shots of the ranch the people were staying at, wide open and empty countryside and fields. Now for the rating, I'm sorry but two good points amidst of film of wrongs only permit me to award 3 stars.
