After passing this over a few tines due to poor reviews I finally gave it a go and am really glad that I did. In reality this is a very good film , good science fiction , entertaining and a moving story about a father and son . If you like sci fi you honestly wont be disappointed.

If the idea was for Will to usher his son into the acting business, it sure didn't work. Apart from anything else, Will turned his natural charm and charisma way down, so as to not outshine his son too much. No need, even Keanu Reeves is decidedly non-wooden next to anybody in this turkey. I am really amazed that M. Night Shyamalan is still able to find work. He has to take the blame squarely for this embarrassing, steamy turd of a movie. Maybe a lot of bad judgement on Will's part as well. Hopefully the younger Mr. Smith will learn something from this, and choose to do something else with his life. I won't go on and enumerate all the things wrong with the movie; it's already been done here. If you haven't seen it, please don't bother. And hope that Mr. M. Night Shyamalan is finally drummed out of the movie business.

Will and Jaden Smith have crash landed on a hostile planet; the only two survivors on a ship that looks like a set made of plastic and egg cartons. "Everything on this planet is evolved to kill humans", Will says. That planet is Earth, Will has broken both legs and is immobile. It has fallen to Jaden to retrieve a rescue beacon from the rear half of the ship which has broken off and is 100 km away.The real star of the movie is the scenery. There is so much forest that this could just as easily have been another planet. Making it Earth adds nothing simply because Shyamalan has side stepped the decision to make this a film about environmental impact. Instead After Earth is constructed as a survival story meant to bring out the bond between father and son. At this, After Earth fails. The script is thin to the point of feeling non-existent, and both Jaden and Will fail to sell. Will Smith, as the 'good soldier / poor father' gives the kind of bloodless, over composed, performance that recalls the cardboard acting style of the original Star Trek. He does not even attempt to find his humanity, but I can't say I blame him. With a script that gives him nothing to work from, why should be bother. The camera spends more time on Jaden, who has even less of a character to work from. He is a disoriented video game character in a game that lacks vision.On this Earth, the temperature drops five degrees every ten minutes at the end of the day, and there are some neat shots of the green canopy fading to snow white. There is also a nifty but short sequence where Jaden dives off a cliff and into a cat and mouse chase with a Condor. Otherwise, the obstacle course is surprisingly boring. After Earth climaxes with a battle against a big CG creature, which looks like a George Lucas reject.Shyamanlan fails as a writer and director to craft the elements needed to build tension. There is no feeling of a 'race against the clock', other than Jaden's limited supply of Oxygen tablets nor is there the feeling of terror lurking in the vegetation, recalling the Village and Signs.James Newton Howard, has done some phenomenal scores but this is not one of them. The sound track has a very empty feeling, and is just as lazy as everything else in this picture.

'After Earth' is not a perfect film, not by any means. But for someone to say that this is the worst film of the last decade or one of the worst films of all time means that this is a grossly misunderstood film as even in its poorest moments there are still a lot of redeeming qualities to take into consideration.Like its science-fiction concept. Humankind had to evacuate planet Earth because pollution has rendered the planet inhospitable and colonise a new planet, Nova Prime. 1,000 years have passed and the year is 3071. On a mission with his son Kitai Raige to transport a contained but very hostile alien species called the Ursa, general Cypher Raiger orders the crew on his spaceship to land on our planet after being drastically hit by an asteroid shower. The twist? Well Earth has also changed in these 1,000 years free of human interference. As Cypher explains to Kitai: "This is a class 1 quarantined planet. Everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans." I won't reveal much more of the plot, but as one can see this is a very intriguing concept for a science-fiction movie. I also love the acting. This is a film that deals heavily with the relationship between father and son and there could have been few better candidates more suitable for the role than Will and Jaden Smith. A lot of people have criticized their dialogue in this movie, commenting that is not the way a father speaks to his son in real life, but have they ever considered that maybe they were supposed to sound like that? After all, Cypher is no ordinary dad. He's a general, a so-called 'Ghost', who has trained his mind not to show any fear and thus be rendered invisible to an Ursa alien, who preys on human fear and maybe emotion too. Whoever expects a normal father-son relationship in this movie is clearly barking up the wrong tree. And there is another plot detail involving Kitai's sister which I will not spoil here but which also sheds light on their strained relationship.There are some nice details complementing this movie as well. When general Cypher salutes the one-legged soldier before embarking on their mission, for instance, is a brilliant example of foreshadowing of what happens later on in the movie.All in all, 'After Earth' is an entertaining movie. It won't set the movie-going world on fire but it certainly doesn't deserve all these negative reviews.
