This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

Afro samurai was one of the better anime films I've watched. Although I found the plot simplistic (which can in some cases is good), the art work and script were "off the chain"...not to mention the soundtrack (had to make it my dojo's theme music). The first 5 episodes were entertaining but I must admit that the ending was somewhat....campy. This was (imho)due to a lack of character development of afro. Although the flashbacks give good insight into his evolution to reclaim the #2 headband...how he became such a formidable samurai without his father's instruction is not really addressed. More importantly the ending had a sort of "rabbit out of the hat trick" flavor to it. From my account the #1 beat him...impaling him through the head with...whatever that was. I've had to console myself by filling in the blanks with some very creative thinking on this matter...such as "he wasn't impaled..it just went through his 'fro' similar to the spears (episode 1)" this time the glancing blow drew blood from. Some more development of the #1 with insight as to who/what he was would have also enhanced the viewing. At any rate still one of my favorites...after the Ninja Scroll...would love to see Afro and Jubei have a go at it.

I loved Afro Samurai for many reasons. The story isn't the most unique you will ever find, but the great action scenes and cool art style make up for it. The fights are fast-paced and gory, and the art style is innovative and uses plenty of dark shadings to give every thing a shadowy tone.It mixes together Japanese anime culture, rap, and other things to make one AWESOME anime. And I can't review this without mentioning the great job that Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Pearlman did with their voice acting. I just wish this could have went at least 20 episodes to really extend the story. And since it was only 5 episodes, there was basically a fight in every single episode, and that takes away the feeling of drama and importance of the fights. It just feels like an actionfest at times. But for the 5 episodes that it lasted, it was a very fun and entertaining anime.

looking at the cover and synopsis of this, i thought I'd be in for a treat. i was greatly disappointed however. watching this made me realize just how much advanced Samurai Jack is, in every aspect. this has its fair share of blood and gore, but the silent macho persona of the main character is becoming a very tired medium to watch, the voice overs are so poor to the extent that i preferred to switch the sound off to mute, and the animation, even though it looked dark and pretty in some cases, for the most part it looked like a dated '80's cartoon. and if i wanted to watch a relatively average '80's style animated series, i have a good fair share to pick from. i really wanted to like this. i was excited even that i found something like this from a local rental store. but now I'm eager to take it back..kids will probably dig it though, no doubt. i don't think i was this critical with my cartoons back in the day.

Well the drawing is good, the style is modern, the blood is plenty. But that doesn't make a good show. The story has been told a hundred times, the sidekick sucks with his constant babbling, and the actors' afro American slang makes it just another show using this prejudice to look stylish. In short: nothing original, but nice to look at. Because IMDb forces me to: I almost constantly had the feeling the creator watched too much Tarantino movies, especially Kill Bill. Which would be very convenient because another one did the collection of classic references for you. And partly I was reminded of another really great show: Samurai Jack. That's an example for original and greatly designed.
