Set in 1944 France, an American Intelligence Squad locates a German Platoon wishing to surrender rather than die in Germany's final war offensive. The two groups of men, isolated from the war at present, put aside their differences and spend Christmas together before the surrender plan turns bad and both sides are forced to fight the other.

A Midnight Clear Audience Reviews

GamerTab That was an excellent one.
VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
winch-1 This was not a film a WWII vet would enjoy. Trust me.When my 73-year-old father-in-law came to visit, my wife decided to fill an afternoon with a video he might like, a war movie. Being Christmastime, she chose this particular war movie for her elderly father. One would assume such a man might be uncomfortable watching a war movie featuring disdain for the Army, snowball fights with the Germans, random religious symbolism, a homo-necro-erotic moment, collusion with the enemy, and a deeply felt anti-war message. Though I think this is one of the finest anti-war movies (with a Christmas theme) ever made, I did point out to my wife that we do have a copy of "12 O'Clock High" she could have shown her dad instead. (He was grumpy for the next two days after watching this.)Beautiful direction and camera work, with Utah subbing for the German-French frontier in wintertime. (You will feel colder watching this movie.) A thoughtful film with tension, grace, action, emerging stars and a fascinating story, "A Midnight Clear" isn't a family film, by any means. There are too many "F"-bombs for kids, and too little John Wayne, respect, and gung-ho attitude (but enough blood) for the Greatest Generation.Like "M*A*S*H" in its darker moments? Then you're going to like "A Midnight Clear".
pattiscool I always have admired Keith Gordon's adaptation of William Wharton's novel ever since i first saw it when i was younger. Its effective, emotional, draws strong performances out of its young (well, at the time) cast, but most importantly, its unique. Different has always been good- it makes things more compelling. Its a WWII movie unlike any other, and it shows a different side of war. M. Gordon's directing is excellent, and i've heard the same thing from many young filmmakers that i know. I won dwell much on the story because IMDb's policy is so strong and this is my first time writing a comment, but i'd recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys quality cinema: You don't need to be a die-hard war movie fan to get something out of this movie. Kudos for drawing such a strong response out of the cast on such a interesting story.
jman_va This movie was by far one of the very best war moves ever made (it is at least in the top 10). What makes this movie even more special is that it was a sleeper film that did not receive enough marketing when it was initially released. This movie, base during WW2 leading up to the Battle of the Bulge (the Ardenes Counter Offensive) and looks at the truly desperate situation of both sides and the senselessness of the German cause, and a bit of anti-war sentiment thrown in. It truly is a wonderfully sad film (yes a very good oxy-moron) that depicts these events. If you appreciate WW2 films, anti-war films, or just a very deep drama, you truly MUST see this movie!
sdscooper In over 40 years of war movie viewing I have to say that this is one of the worst I have ever seen. I was tempted to turn it off after the first 10 minutes, but suffered through another fifty or so until the Americans threw a grenade at the Germans and the Germans threw a snow ball back. Off the VCR went. The screen play, the script and the characters were awful. While they made a commendable 1992 effort at making the Americans look authentic, they fell flat on their faces with the Germans. The 1960's T.V. series "COMBAT" had better looking German uniforms. I won't even go into commenting on the poor girl who lost her love in the war-turned hooker scenes. The whole movie (what I could stand watching of it) showed a complete lack of understanding of the period and combat conditions it portrayed. While I may not agree with the politics of "PLATOON's" director, he did an outstanding job in conveying a feeling of authenticity to the viewer. By the time I turned "A MIDNIGHT CLEAR" off I found myself daydreaming more than watching the movie. How this movie can receive so many great reviews is beyond me, but I guess to each his own.Be forewarned
