While walking the streets of Amsterdam Abram Szanowski was arrested and transported to Mauthausen concentration camp, where he was later murdered. Guta Szanowski immediately fled to Switzerland, leaving her newborn daughter, Elli, in hiding with the family housekeeper; Johanna Hakkens.
